This study analyzes audio materials used in Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) listening comprehension test to examine whether the used audio materials reflect the native Korean conversation speech rate and how the speech rate shows consistency in each examination. TOPIK is designed to evaluate Korean language proficiency of overseas Koreans and foreigners who do not speak Korean as their mother tongue. Noting the significance of listening comprehension in evaluating learners’ communication ability, it is imperative to produce authentic TOPIK audio materials that reflect Korean language communication in everyday life. In addition, audio materials with consistency should be provided in each test to evaluate test-takers’ language fluency properly. Thus this study explores audio materials from three different TOPIK listening comprehension tests to analyze authenticity and consistency of speech rate of the exam. The speech rate will be assessed from each TOPIK listening comprehension test, comparing different dialogue categories and exam questions of varying levels of difficulty. Then, the data will be analyzed by the SPSS program to attest the statistical significance. This study ultimately aims to stress the importance of audio materials with consistency and authenticity to TOPIK examiners, Korean language textbook publishers, and Korean learners.
