이 글은 현대 한국어 형성기에 국문으로 뜻풀이를 한 『국한문신옥편』, 『자전석요』, 『신자전』 등의 자전이 연이어 나오게 된 배경을 당시의 어문 환경과 관련지어 보고, 이 자전들에 반영된 언어가 독본 등에 반영된 당시의 현실 언어와 어떤 관계를 맺고, 언어생활에서 어떤 역할에 했을지에 대하여 살펴보고자 하는 것이다. 이 시기에 한자음에 대한 수요, 한자의 뜻에 대한 정확한 구별, 교육 등의 목적에서 실제 언어생활에 도움을 줄 국문으로 뜻풀이가 된 새로운 형태의 자전이 나오기를 갈망하고 있었다는 것은 여러 잡지의 기사를 통해서 볼 수 있다. 실제 독본 자료를 보면 한자음의 변화로 인한 한자음의 정리와 통일의 필요성, 한자어와 국한문을 이해하기 위한 한자의 뜻을 정확히 알고 한자가 쓰인 문맥에서의 의미나 기능을 정확하고 효율적으로 파악할 수 있도록 하는 다의어와 유의어를 충실히 반영한 자전의 필요성이 여실히 드러난다. 이렇게 편찬된 자전이 한문의 번역과는 어떤 관계를 맺을지를 살펴보니, 『시문독본』에서 최남선이 번역한 『열하일기』와 이윤재가 번역한 『도강록』을 한문 원문-국한문 번역문- 『신자전』의 뜻풀이와 견주어 본 바, 정도의 차이는 있지만 『신자전』에 제시된 정보가 대체로 국한문 속에서 보이는 정보와 일치했고 국어의 통사적 질서와 맥락속에서 번역한 국한문이 언중들에게 자연스럽게 읽히도록 적절히 변형되어 있다. 이런 점을 고려할 때 최남선과 이윤재는 번역을 하는 데에 『신자전』 등의 자전을 참고하거나 활용하였을 가능성이 충분하다고 하겠다.

The aim of this paper is as below. Firstly, I``d like to examine compilation of Chinese-Korean dictionary as Kukhanmunsinokpyeon, Jajeonseogyo and Sinjajeon that defined in Korean in relation with changing environment of Korean. Secondly, I``d like to examine relation with language of Chinese-Korean dictionary and reality language reflected in Korean reader. Thirdly, I``d like to examine the role of language of Chinese-Korean dictionary in language life at that period. There were many demand for arrangement and unification of Sino-Korean, exact distinction of the meaning of Chinese characters and including and presentation of accurate and rich polysemy and thesaurus in Prensentday Korean formative period. And, It seems to have been used of Chinese-Korean dictionary in the translation Chinese into Korean. We can could that using of the definition, polysemy and thesaurus in Chinese-Korean dictionary in translation of Yeolhailgi by Choi, Nam-seon and Yi Yun-jae.
