< 모던조선외래어사전 >은 현대적 사전 편찬 방식이 구현된 근대 외래어 신어어휘에 대한 살아 있는 기록이다. < 모던 >의 표제항을 분석한 결과 총 14,203개의 표제항이 실려 있고, 이표기의 단위까지 분리하니 16,099개의 표기가 실려 있었다. < 모던 >은 자모, 접사, 일반적인 단어와 약어, 구, 문장 등 다양한 단위를 표제항으로 싣고 있는데 이중 10% 이상이 구 이상의 단위임이 드러나 외래어유입 초반에 단어를 넘어서는 단위를 통째로 받아들이는 경향이 두드러졌음을 알 수 있다. < 모던 >의 표제항 중 94%가 영어를 원어로 한다는 것은 < 모던 >의 자서에서 현대 외래어의 구할을 영어가 차지하고 있다고 기술한 것과 일치하는 결과이다. 영어의 뒤를 이어 독일어, 불어, 범어, 포르투갈어, 네덜란드어, 러시아어, 이탈리아어의 순으로 많은 외래어가 유입된 것으로 분석되었다. < 모던 >은 범례에 제시한 것보다 훨씬 많은 177개의 전문영역 표지를 사용하여 전문용어인표제항에 대해 상세하게 기술하였다. < 모던 > 수록 어휘에 대한 계량적 정보를 통해 근대 외래어 어휘의 실체를 가늠할 수 있었으며 외래어 어휘의 구조, 사용양상 변화 등에 대한 후속 연구가 기대된다.

< The New Dictionary of Foreign Words in Modern Korean > is the record of modern foreign neologism based on the modern dictionary compilation method. In the results of entering all the entries of < Modern > and then analyzing them, there were 14,203 entries more than the existing report. Dividing the entries into the unit of different transcription, total 16,099 were found. As < Modern > contains diverse units like letter, affix, general word & abbreviation, phrase, and sentence as entries, more than 10% of them is the unit higher than phrase, which shows a noticeable trend of accepting the whole unit exceeding the word in the early stage of the inflow of loanwords. The fact that 94% of entries in < Modern > is English accords with the description of the preface in < Modern > that 90% of modern loanwords is English. Following English, there have been many loanwords flown in such as German, French, Sanskrit, Portuguese, Dutch, Russian, and Italian in the order. < Modern > described the technical vocabulary for entry in detail by using 177 professional signs much more than the introductory remarks. Through the quantitative data of the words contained in < Modern >, the truth of the modern loanwords could be estimated, and it is also expected to have following researches on the structure of loan words and changes in the use aspect.
