삼국유사 피은(避隱)편 소재 「영재우적」조에는 향가 < 우적가 >와 < 우적가 >의 작자인 석(釋) 영재의 일화를 담은 이야기가 수록되어 전하고 있다. 「영재우적」조를 해석함에 있어 기존 연구자들은 < 우적가 >가 지어진 시대적 배경이나 노래의 등장 인물들-영재와 도적-의 정체 그리고 「영재우적」조가 수록되어 있는 삼국유사 피은편과의 연관성을 중심을 두고 다양하게 연구하여 왔다. 그러나 기존 연구에서는 「영재우적」조 배경설화의 결자(缺字) 3자와 그 의미를 간과하고 해석하여 왔다. 이 논문에서는 그러한 < 우적가 >의 배경설화에 관한 기존 논문의 한계를 벗어나서 석 영재에 관한 이야기의 전체적인 서사 맥락을 파악해보고 그에 따른 등장 인물들의 의미 변화를 통해 더 정확한 「영재우적」조의 의미 파악을 시도하였다.「영재우적」조의 등장인물 중 하나인 석 영재의 경우 그의 성품을 ‘釋永才性 滑稽 不累於物’이라고 직접적으로 기술되어 있다. 기존의 논의에서는 이를 두고 영재의 두 가지 특성을 병렬적으로 나열한 것으로 파악하여 ‘석 영재는 성품이 골계하고 사물에 얽매이지 않았다’고 해석하였다. 그러나 이 부분은 ‘석 영재는 성품이 골계하였지만 사물에 얽매이지 않았다’로 해석하여야 한다고 보았다. 또한 본문의 결자 3자를 통해 도둑들이 영재에게 < 우적가 >를 짓도록 직접적으로 명령했던 것은 아니었으며 영재가 도적들을 교화하기 위한 수단으로 향가 장르를 선택하였다는 사실을 파악하였다.다른 등장인물인 도적들의 정체는 당대의 사회상을 살펴볼 때 단순히 선(영재)을 위협하는 악의 무리로 서술되고 있는 것이 아닌 상황에 따라 변화하는, 선과 악이 내적으로 공존하고 있는 평범한 사람들을 상징하고 있다고 보았다. 따라서 「영재우적」조를 읽는 독자는 고고한 인품을 지닌 영재의 능력에 대리만족을 느끼기 보다는 현실적인 이유로 물질에 사로잡혀 있는 도둑들에 감정이입할 수 있는 개연성이 높다고 보았다.「영재우적」조의 서사적 전개는 물욕에 사로잡힌 도적들과 도적들의 마음 속의 선함을 일깨워주는 조력자 영재를 중심으로 전개되는데 특히 도적들이 물욕에서 벗어나게 되는 과정이 ①칼날 앞에서도 두려워하지 않는 영재를 보고 이상하게 생각하며 그의 정체를 궁금해 함, ②영재의 향가를 들은 후 그 의미를 이해하여 물욕에서 벗어난 듯 보이지만 영재에게 오히려 재물을 바침으로써 물욕에서 아직 완전히 벗어나지는 못한 모습을 보임, ③실제로 재물을 가벼이 여기는 영재를 보고 마음 속 깊이 탄복하여 영재를 따라 피은함 등 점차 강한 교화적 수단을 사용하는 점층식 3단 구성으로 되어 있다.결국 삼국유사 소재 「영재우적」조는 서사 중심의 기록물로써 그 길이는 길지 않지만 치밀한 서사 구조 때문에 등장 인물의 치환이나 서사의 확대·재생산이 용이한 설화이기에 오랫동안 사람들의 입에 오르내 리면서 오랜 기간 동 안 그 생명력을 잃지 않고 전승될 수 있었던 것이다.
The Pieun(避隱) chapter of Samkookyusa has been included Hyangga and the story of an author monk(釋) Youngjae. Former researchers have studied through its historical background or the characters’ identities or relations Pieun chapter. However, previous studies overlooked the missed 3 characters on the background story. In this paper, I tried to find out the overall narrative context of the story and identify the meaning of the story through significant changes of the characters’ role at the part of Youngjaewoojeok story in order to overcome the limitations of the previous studies.Monk Woojeok is one of the characters of Youngjaewoojeok story. His personalities are directly recorded as ``釋永才性滑稽不累於物``. In the previous studies, It has been understood that his two personalities were narrated in parallel. However, this should be interpreted what explains his nature is ‘Golgye’ without greed. Through analysis of the part of missed characters, the thieves had not ordered to write but Youngjae himself selected Hyangga genre as a means to enlighten the thieves.Identity of the other characters, thieves is a symbol of ordinary people that good and evil coexist internally and comes up one of them depending on the contemporary situation. Therefore, there is a high probability that readers of Youngjaewoojeok story can empathize with the thieves rather than Youngjae who has an aloof personality.A narrative of Youngjaewoojeok story is developed in focused on thieves and Youngjae. Especially the process which the thieves overcome their greed is consisted of three gradational phase. ① the nature of Youngjae that is not fear in front of the blade ② edification using linguistic method ③ direct action which throw away the silk given as gift case to edify the thieves.Eventually Samkookyusa is a narrative centered documentary and its length is not long, but reproductions of the narrative is easy because of its finespun narrative structure. It could be handed down for a long period of time without losing its vitality due to the narrative structure
