이 논문은 영웅소설에 나타난 괴물과 괴물스러움의 양상과 의미를 미국의 대중문화인 슈퍼히어로 장르와 대비하여 설명하고자 하였다. 구체적으로는 각장르에서 주인공은 왜 타자성을 지닌 존재로 등장하는가, 괴물스러운 주인공은 어떻게 영웅이 되는가, 영웅의 괴물 죽이기는 어떤 의미가 있는가 등에 대해 분석하였다. 영웅소설과 슈퍼히어로 장르에서 주인공이 타자성을 지닌 존재로 등장하는 까닭은 타자성이 그의 비범함을 정당화하는 서사적 장치로 기능하기 때문이다. 그런데 주인공의 괴물스러움에 대해 두 장르는 다른 양상을 보인다. 슈퍼히어로 장르에서 대중은 슈퍼히어로를 갈망하기 때문에 그의 괴물스러움을 배척하지 않는다. 하지만 영웅소설에서 사람들은 주인공의 괴이함에서 두려움을 느낀다. 이러한 반응은 주인공을 괴물로 만드는 정서적 근거가 된다. 타자성을 띤 주인공이 영웅으로 등극하는 과정은 두 장르에서 서로 다르게 나타난다. 엄청난 능력을 지닌 슈퍼히어로들이 영웅이 되는 까닭은 그들에게 초월적인 도덕성이 있기 때문이다. 즉, 그들의 도덕성은 물리적인 초능력과 마찬가지로 슈퍼히어로의 본래적 자질로 간주되는 것이다. 이와 달리, 영웅소설에서 주인공은 자신의 괴이함을 자각하고 새로운 정체를 탐색한다. 이 과정은 이중적이어서, 공동체에 혼란을 야기하면서 동시에 주인공을 윤리적인 존재로서 체제에 편입시킨다. 즉, 영웅소설에서 주인공들은 윤리적 지향을 통해 자신의 괴이함을 무마한다. 영웅소설과 슈퍼히어로 장르에서 주인공이 괴물을 죽이기는 체제를 수호하는 가장 극적인 사건이다. 슈퍼히어로 장르에서 괴물 죽이기는 슈퍼악당에 대한 처치로 드러나는데, 이는 도덕적 포르노로서의 의미가 있다. 영웅소설에서 괴물죽이기는 주인공 자신의 괴물스러움을 극복하는 것과 실제 괴물을 죽이는 것으로 드러난다. 주인공은 체제에 편입함으로써 자신의 괴물스러움을 극복한다. 실제괴물을 죽이는 양상은 다양한데, 역사적으로는 괴물 죽이기는 점차 축소되면서 체제에 대한 낙관론이 유포된다.

I intend to explain the monster and the monstrosity in Hero novel comparing with Superhero genre. It may be the answer of three questions; Why is hero an existence with otherness? How could the monstrous hero become a hero? What does killing monster mean in the story. The reason why hero is the one with otherness is that his otherness justify his extra ordinariness. But the way how people deal with the monstrosity of hero looks different between these two genres. In superhero genre, it doesn``t matter to people because they are longing for the hero. In hero novel, many people feel some danger and it makes him more monstrous. And the process of the monstrous one becoming hero come out in different way. The reason why the extra ordinary beings deny selfish stance but choose hero life is that they are extra moral beings. So their good will power is regarded as a sort of super power like physical capability. But in hero novel, hero realizes his monstrous origin and begins to explore his own life and identity. This course shows dual meanings. He brings about crisis of community and at the same time he is given a new birth of socio- familiar one even a true hero. Killing monster is the most dramatic accident to protect the society. In superhero genre, killing monster appear as a triumph against super villain. And this ending effect a moral pornography. In hero novel, killing monster appear in two aspects; one is overcoming his own monstrosity, another is killing a real monster. There are various aspects of killing real monster but the importance of this event is getting lessened and the optimism about society is getting spread in hero novel history.
