오늘날 디자인 수행 방식의 복잡성은 시각 체계나 질서 부여에 관하는 논의보다 더 넓은 이해가 필요함을 보여주고 있다. 이와 같은 맥락에서 정보디자인의 중요성이 일반화에 따라 ‘정보’를 디자인 이론과 실무의 내용으로 다뤄야 하는 경향 또한 증대되었다. 이를 바탕으로 이제는, 무엇이 정보인지를 고민하는 것 즉, 정보에 관한 고찰 또한 중요해지고 있다. 정보디자인은 주제와 대상 및 현상이나 그 변화도를 파악하는 방법을 보다 효율적으로 재현하여 소비자나 수용자 위주의 정보 전달의 방법론에서 우위를 점하겠다는 태도를 취한다. 이러한 방법론은 “분류하기-분석하기”와 동시에, 그(주제/현상의) 인과율을 파악하기 위한 “대상화” 그리고 이를 뒷받침하는 정확성 즉, “확정성의 추구”를 그 사고의 배경으로 한다. 이 연구는 상기의 세 가지 주요 개념들이 우리 삶에서 작용하는 방식을 고찰한 사회학과 정보학, 과학사 및 과학철학, 그리고 과학기술학 분야의 문헌과 사례 연구들을 통해 앞선 세 가지 개념들의 인식론적, 수행적 특성 및 한계를 분석한다. 더 나아가, 과학적 방법론을 바탕으로 이루어지고 있는 정보디자인의 실험과 실천들이, 실제의 복잡함을 보다 깊이 있게 재고할 수 있게 하는 비평적 질문항들을 제시한다.

The complex performativity of contemporary design issues ask for broader understanding of the system itself than we have found and practiced some rules in pre-existing visual ordering. As the importance of Information Design has become generalized, it has become critical to ponder on what is information, that is, to reflect on information. The methodology of Information Design is based on "to classify and to analyze" and simultaneously, "to objectify (subjects/phenomena)" to figure out the causality, and accuracy to support such setting-up, that is, to seek "certainty". This paper analyzes documents and case studies on various applications of the aforementioned three notions in our life, in the fields of Sociology, Informatics, History and Philosophy of Science, Science and Technology Studies. And, epistemological and performative features and limits of the three notions will be analyzed. Furthermore, three questionnaires enabling critical thinking on real complexity will be proposed by Information Design practices based on scientific methodology.
