이 글에서는 최명길의 ‘병자봉사’에 나타난 글쓰기 방법을 분석하여 학생들이 설득적 글쓰기를 수행하는 데 활용할 수 있는 방법적 지식이나 전략을 탐구하고자 하였다. 상소문은 오늘날 통용될 수 있는 글쓰기 양식은 아니지만 필자가 정책 결정자인 임금을 설득하기 위하여 치밀한 논리와 고도의 표현 전략을 활용하였다는 점에서 교육적 의의를 지니고 있다. 특히 병자호란 이라는 민족적 차원의 논쟁을 배경으로 상소문의 대가로 인정받는 최명길이 산출한 ‘병자봉사’의 글들은 문화적 가치와 함께 설득의 방법을 집약한 모범 텍스트로서의 위상을 동시에 지니고 있다. 병자봉사에서 최명길은 당대의 절대적 가치 체계에 대항하여 국가와 백성의 안위를 보존하기 위해 임금을 대상으로 고도의 설득적 글쓰기 작업을 수행하였다. 이는 논리적으로 완결되고 빈틈없는 논지 전개, 상황 맥락에 부합하는 다양한 논증 도식의 활용, 임금의 동의를 이끌어내기 위한 효율적 표현 전략의 구사를 통해 구현되었다. 최명길이 병자봉사에서 보여준 이러한 성취는 병자봉사를 설득적 글쓰기의 전범 텍스트로 가능하게 만들고 오늘날의 작문 교육에 적용할 수 있는 많은 시사점을 제공하고 있다.

The purpose of this study is to suggest a method of persuasive writing. To achieve the purpose, this article analyzed Byeongjabongsa(丙子封事) which was written by Choi, Myeonggil in 1636. The contents of Byeongjabongsa deal with the problems of diplomatic policy between Chosun Dynasty and Qing Dynasty. Choi, Myeonggil insisted that Chosun should make peace with Qing in Byeongjabongsa, which conflicted with the opinion of most people at that time. To persuade king, Choi, Myeonggil must struggle against the stubborn opinion in Byeongjabongsa. First he unfolded the gist systematically using problem-solving structure and comparison-contrast structure. Second he made use of diverse argumentation schemes in accord with situation context. Finally he had good command of demanding expression strategy to persuade king effectively. The achievement of his writing method in Byeongjabongsa offers many insights for writing education.
