본 연구의 목적은 쓰기 화제와 글 유형이 정해지지 않은 쓰기 과제를 제시하였을 때, 초등학생과 중학생들이 주로 어떤 유형과 화제를 선택하는지, 이러한 선택에서 학년, 성에 따라 차이가 있는지를 분석하는 것이다. 연구대상은 초등학생 484명과 중학교 282명이었으며, 쓰기 과제는 평소 자신이 쓰고 싶었던 글을 자유롭게 쓰되 산문으로만 작성하도록 하였다. 학생들은 개인적/일상적 화제, 공동체적 화제, 비현실적/상상적 화제 중에서 개인적/일상적 화제를 가장 많이 선택하였으며, 초등학생은 비현실적/상상적 화제가 두 번째였으며, 중학생은 공동체적 화제가 두 번째였다. 학년별차이는 초등학교에서만 통계적으로 유의하였으며, 성별 차이는 초등학교와중학교 모두 나타나지 않았다. 세 가지 쓰기 화제에 대해 각각 하위 화제들로 나누어 학생들의 선호 양상을 분석하였다. 학생들은 정보를 전달하는 글, 설득하는 글, 정서 표현의 글, 허구적 이야기·소설 중에서 정서 표현의 글을 가장 선호하였으며, 그 다음으로 초등학생은 이야기·소설, 정보를 전달하는 글, 설득하는 글의 순이었고, 중학생은 설득하는 글, 정보를 전달하는 글, 이야기·소설의 순이었다. 학년별 차이는 초등학교에서만 통계적으로 유의하였으며, 성별 차이는 초등학교와 중학교모두 발견되지 않았다. 쓰기 과제에 대한 학생들의 흥미에 따라 쓰기 학습의 효과가 달라질 수있으므로, 쓰기 과제 개발 등 쓰기 교육의 다양한 국면에서 쓰기 화제와 글유형에 대한 학생들의 선호를 고려할 필요가 있다.
The purpose of this study is to analyze writing topic and text type preferences in a free topic writing task performed by elementary and middle school students. Four hundred and eighty four elementary and 282 middle school students participated in this study. First, the topic analyses showed that personal/everyday topics were most preferred by elementary and middle school students. While in elementary school imaginative topics were second, in middle school it was social topics. There was a statistically significant difference by grades in the elementary school only and no statistically significant differences by gender in either school. The writing topic categories were classified under subcategories and students’ preferences of these subcategories were analyzed. Second, the text type analyses showed that expressive text was most preferred by elementary and middle school students, followed by story/fiction and informative and persuasive text in elementary school, and persuasive and informative text and story/fiction in middle school. There were statistically significant differences by grades in the elementary school only and no statistically significant differences by gender in either school.
