이 논문은 염상섭의 장편소설 『이심(二心) 』을 중심으로 여성에 관한 스캔들이 어떻게 소설 속에서 중요한 서사적 동력으로 작동하는지, 그리고 그렇게 스캔들화된 여성과 그를 중심으로 구조화되는 서사가 염상섭 소설에서 어떤 의미를 갖는지를 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 『이심』 이전에 염상섭 소설 속 스캔들은 사건의 이면에 감춰진 진실을 폭로함으로써 현실을 좀 더 생동감 있고 사실적으로 재현하기 위해 요구되는 일종의 서사적 장치로 활용되었다면, 『이심』에서는 서사를 직조하는 하나의 원리이자 이를 통해 만들어진 문학적 현실 그 자체가 되고 있다. 즉 『이심』의 스캔들화된 여성은 이야기를 진전시키는 서사 내적 동력 기이자 식민지 조선의 우울한 현실을 세태화해서 문학적으로 전사(轉寫)하는 염상섭식 소설문법을 알레고리적으로 암시한다. 따라서 『이심』의 ‘스캔들화된 여성’을 해독하는 일은 1920년대 후반부터 염상섭 장편소설의 서사적 중핵 역할을 해 온 ‘모던 걸’의 서사 내적 논리와 의미를 이해하기 위해서 우선적으로 요구된다. 이를 위해 이 글에서는 플롯 형성과 인물 형성이라는 두 가지 차원의 서사화 논리를 중심으로 ‘스캔들화된 여성’에 대해 살펴보았다. 우선 플롯 형성의 차원에서 『이심』은 단순히 떠도는 ‘거짓’ 이야기가 ‘취조’를 통해 ‘진짜’ 사건이 되는몇 가지 에피소드도 엮여 있는데, 이처럼 『이심』의 플롯은 이처럼 스캔들을 매개로 거짓이 사실로 대체되는 기이한 반복의 구조로 짜여 있다. 그 다음으로 인물 형성의 차원에서 『이심』은 ‘주의자’ 창호와 ‘매음녀’ 춘경의 짝패적 관계를 중심으로 전개된다. ‘감옥’과 ‘유곽’ 모두 서사적 욕망을 불가능하게 하는 이야기의 볼모지라는 점에서 상동적 관계라고 볼 수 있다. 그런 점에서 사회주의자와 모던 걸은 이종동형적 관계에 있다. 그러나 춘경은 타고난 창부적 기질이 강조 되면서 서사 내의 모든 죄를 덮어 쓰는 ‘욕 주머니’가 되어 그 죄에 대한 처벌을 죽음으로써 받는다. 그런 점에서 이 둘의 관계는 불균등하게 맺어져 있다고 볼 수 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 소설의 결말 부분에서 작가 염상섭은 다양한 플롯 짜기와 다층적 현실과의 만남을 통해 규범적 스캔들을 탈규범화함으로써 비로소 통속이 아닌 세태 소설에 도달하게 된다. 『이심』은 바로 그러한 작가적 모색이 이루어 지던 시기의 소설이자 스캔들이 소설로 변모하는 서사적 과정을 암시적으로 보여주는 소설이라고 할 수 있다.

This study aims to reveal how the scandals about women works as an important power source in novel, and the meaning of scandalized women and it’s narrative in Yeom Sangseop’s novel focusing his novel Yisim(『이심』). Before Yisim, the scandals in his novel were used as a kind of narrative device with which reveal the truth behind the event and represent the reality more vividly and realistically. However, in Yisim, the scandals become a principal which makes narrative and futhermore a literary reality as such. Then deciphering the ‘scandalized women’ in novel Yisim is necessary to understand the inner narrative logic and its meaning of the ‘modern girl’, which works as a narrative kernel in Yeom Sangseop’s novel since 1920s. To reveal this, I examine the scandalized women focusing on two level of narrative logic, the plotting and forming character. At first, the level of plotting, the plot of Yisim is be comprised of a strange structure of repetition in which the untruth becomes the truth by the scandal. And the level of forming character, the narrative of Yisim is unfolded with ‘socialist’ and ‘prostitute’ as the double as its center. The ‘prison’ and ‘prostitute quarters’ in which they locked, have a homology in the way that they are the wasteland of narrative in which the narrative desire are made impassible. In that sense, socialist and modern girl are homologous characters in the narrative of Yeom Sangseop’s novel. In the end of the novel, Yeom Sangseop reach novel of manners but rather popular novel by denormalization of the normal scandal, and that achieve was possible by various plotting and the meeting with multilayered reality.
