중국어로 ‘哲學’은 바로 philosophy의 번역이었고 이 일본어 번역이 중국에 등장하기 전에는 중국에서는 서양처럼 고금각종 사상가의 철학을 총칭하는 개념이 없었다. 중국에서는 명말 청초에 천주교 포교사를 통해 들어온 ‘philosophia, philosophy’를 처음에는 斐祿所費亞, 斐祿所費亞 등으로 음역하고, ‘理學’, ‘理科’, ‘格物窮理’, ‘性學’, ‘格致’, ‘愛智(學)’, ‘智學’, ‘格致學’ 등으로 번역하여 사용하다가 19세기 말에 일본에서 번역된 ‘哲學’이라는 용어가 들어오게 된다. 황준헌이 일본에서 만들어진 용어인 ‘哲學’(tetsugaku)을 처음 중국에 가져와 ‘哲學’(zhexue)으로 소개한다. 강유위는 1898년에 독일대학의 학제를 경학, 철학, 율학(즉 법학), 의학으로 나누어 소개하면서 파베러의 ‘智學’을 ‘哲學’으로 대체했다. 엄복은 1898년 간행된 『천연론(天演論)』에서 philosophy를 菲洛蘇非로 음역하고 동시에 愛智로 번역하고 있다. 그리고 理學 또는 智學, 希學으로도 쓰고 있는 것을 볼 수 있다. 일본에 망명 또는 유학을 했거나 일본 서적을 통해 서양철학을 소개하는 양계초, 채원배, 왕국유를 통해 중국에서 ‘철학’ 개념이 본격적으로 수용되기 시작한다. 19세기 말까지는 서양의 철학과 과학, 종교에 대한 분명한 구분 없이 이전에 쓰여진 여러 개념들이 혼용되다가, 20세기 초가 되면 중국에서 ‘격치’가 ‘과학’에 의해 대체됨과 동시에 ‘철학’을 비롯하여 ‘사회학’, ‘과학’, ‘종교’와 같은 번역어가 널리 유포되기 시작한다. 즉 서양의 학문체계가 제대로 수용되면서 ‘철학’, ‘과학’, ‘종교’등의 개념이 하나의 의미장을 형성하면서 점차 확산되고 일반화하기 시작했다고 볼 수 있다.

This paper aims to analyze how the word ``philosophy`` was translated and accepted in China from the perspective of conceptual history. To this aim, I can divide two important periods. First, I reviewed Chinese translations of ``philosophy`` from late Ming(明) dynasty to early Qing(淸) dynasty. Since 17th century Jesuit missionaries had devised various Chinese translations(``理學``, ``格物窮理``, ``性學``, ``格致``, ``愛智``, ``智學``, ``格致學``) on their own terms for the missionary activities, based on the terminology of Confucianism. Second, I reviewed Chinese translations of ``philosophy`` from late Qing(明) dynasty to early 20th century. The western term ``philosophy`` was translated into tetsugaku(哲學) in Japan after the 19th century. China accepted the translated term ``哲學`` from Japan in 1890s. But Chinese Translator could not undersand the whole system of western science and philosophy, therefore the conceptual confusion of philosophy and science was unavoidable in the 1890s. Yan Fu(嚴復) translated ``philosophy`` into rixue(理學). Liang Qi Chao(梁啓超), Chai Yuan Bai(蔡元培), Wang Guo Wei(王國維) translated ``philosophy`` into zhexue(哲學), they did important role to make the concept of philosophy(哲學) spread into modern China.
