In this paper, I contrast the syntax and semantics of the expressions of simultaneous situations in Korean and Chinese. When VP1 and VP2 are connected by ‘-myeonseo’, there is almost no restriction of the aspectual character of both VP1 and VP2 whereas VP1 is the punctual action and VP2 is the continuous/progressive action in sentences that are connected by ‘-go’. VP2’ in Chinese is simmilar to ‘-면서’ in Korean. But the preceding action must be placed at VP1 in Chinese unlike Korean. VP2’ can be used in Chinese only when the both events are totally overlapped. Only when VP1 and VP2 are not related to temporal order but overlapped temporally, VP1 and VP2 change places and have the characteristic of symmetry. Only ‘-myeonseo’ in Korean and ‘一邊VP1一邊VP2’ in Chinese show this symmetric characteristic. But there are more cases that the expressions of the simultaneous situations in Korean and Chinese show Asymmetry than symmetry. The asymmetric characteristic influence on whether one is the figure and the other is the ground of the both clauses. Asymmetry of ‘-고’ in Korean and ‘VP1着VP2’ in Chinese depends on the principle of temporal sequence(PTS) and the semantic relation between VP1 and VP2. The asymmetry of ‘一邊VP1一邊VP2’ are influenced by PTS and the theory of figure and ground.
