김소월의 시론 詩魂은 1920년대 일제 강점 하에 발표된 것으로 김소월이 생각하는 근대시의 특성과 의미에 대한 것을 살펴볼 수 있을 뿐만 아니라,당대 사회에 대응한 시적 기능과 가치를 알 수 있게 하는 글이다. 그런데 당대 제국주의적 파시즘에 대응하는 시의 위상과 기능으로서 생각하고 있는 김소월의 詩魂은 오늘의 입장에서 볼 때 생태주의적 성격을 많이 지니고 있는 특징을 발견하게 된다.이 시론에서 김소월은 시를 쓰게 하는 ‘시혼’은 바로 영혼이 이상적 미의 의장을 입고 출현하는 것으로 순간적인 감정이나 시상과는 다른 대상이라는 점을 강조하고 있다. 이때 시의 근원적 형성원리로 제시하고 있는 ‘시혼’은 바로 물질과 영혼의 이분법적 분류와 근대 과학적 세계관이 갖는 불연속성에 반대하고 있는 것으로 생태주의적 사상을 담고 있는 내용이다. 즉 세계를 물질적 측면으로만 규정하고 분석하는 과학적 세계관과는 달리 물질과 영혼의 소통과 넘나듦을 인정하는 일원론적 태도로서 범신론적 우주관을 보여주고 있는 것이다.또 소월은 영혼이 갖는 의미와 작용에 대해서 당시에 침투해 들어오는 근대자본주의 문명이 갖는 부정성에 대해 환기하고 그 문명이 갖는 부정성을 비판하기 위한 의도로 쓰고 있다. 실제 그는 영혼의 거처와 그것이 갖는 힘의 실체를 언급하는 과정에서 당대 사회의 부정적 현상이라 할 수 있는 도시문명의 비생명성에 대한 비판의 의도로 시혼을 제시하고 있다. 이것은 기술의 발전으로 인한 생명 경시와 생태계 위기를 불러온 근대문명에 대한 비판적 관점의 생태주의적 인식과 일치하는 부분이다. 특히 이는 근대시 작품의 생성원리로서 고유성과 다양성을 의미하는 ‘陰影’이 그 내용적 특질 상 생물지역주의에서 주장하는 구체성과 다양성을 의미한다는 점에서 자연과 인간의 조화를 추구하는 자연주의적 태도로 볼 수 있다.그렇게 볼 때 소월의 ‘시혼론’은 생명에 대한 인식의 근거를 영혼에서 마련했고, 당시 기술문명으로 발전해 가는 근대화의 과정, 즉 일본 제국주의의 독점자본주의화 과정에서 막 상처받기 시작한 뭇 생명들에 대한 애정을 일원론적, 자연주의적 관점에서 피력함으로써 생태주의적 사상이 갖는 성격의 단초를 보여주었다고 할 수 있다.

Kim, So-weol``s essay on poetry - ``Poetic Soul`` which was presented during the Japanese occupation in the 1920s, is the writing that can make it possible for us not only to look into the characteristic and meaning of modern poetry but also to be aware of the poetic function and value responding to the society at that time. By the way, from the 줡oetic Soul즫hich is considered as having a poetic status and function responding to th imperialistic fascism at that time, we get to discover the characteristic assuming much of ecological properties from today``s standpoint. Kim, So-weol, in his essay on poetry, is putting emphasis on the point that ``Poetic Soul`` appears in visual design of ideal beauty, and it is an object different from a momentary emotion or poetic concept. At this point, the ``Poetic Soul`` suggested as the original formative principle is opposed to the dichotomous classification of material and soul, and the discontinuous view of the world of modern scientific outlook on the world, containing the content of the ecological idea. In other words, unlike the scientific outlook on the world which defines and analyzes the world only from the materialistic aspect, ``Poetic Soul`` is showing one aspect of ecological idea which acknowledges the communication and frequenting between material and soul. In addition, So-weol, in relation to the meaning and mechanism of soul, is using ``Poetic Soul`` as an attempt to recall the negativity of modern capitalist civilization, which was infiltrating at that time, and to criticize th negativity of that civilization. Actually, So-weol suggested ``Poetic Soul`` as an intent to criticize non-vitality of urban civilization which could be called a negative phenomenon of the then society in the process of commenting on the abode of soul and truth of its power. This is the part which coincides with the ecological awareness with a critical viewpoint of the modern civilization that has invited the contempt of life and ecological crisis due to technological development. In this context, it might be concluded that So-weol``s theory of ``Poetic Soul`` arranged the grounds for life awareness in soul and showed the beginning of the character possessed by ecological idea by setting forth his affection for all sorts of lives which began to get hurt in the process of modernization evolving into technological civilization, or in the process of imperialism``s transition into Fascism.
