쿠루마(Ahmadou Kourouma)의 세 번째 소설인 『야생동물의 투표를 기다리며(En attendant le vote des betes sauvages)』는 동소마나(donsomana)라고 하는 말링케 족의 전통 서사시의 형식을 취하고 있다. 동소마나는 위대한 인물의 무훈이나 업적을 찬양하는 장르인데 쿠루마는 이를 통하여 코야가(Koyaga)라는 인물의 생애를 그리고 있다. 이 소설에는 코야가의 탄생부터 그의 어린 시절, 그리고 그가 정권을 잡는 과정이 펼쳐져 있다. 그런데 이 소설의 구조가 대단히 복잡하고 어지러움에 주목할 필요가 있다. 한 인물의 생애를 다룸에 있어서, 시간적 순서에 따라 서술하면 가장 명료하고 단순한 구조가 되겠지만 이 소설은 시간적 순서를 뒤바꾸고, 시간을 해체하며, 사건의 흐름을 어긋나게 만들고 있다. 40) 소설의 구조가 이처럼 복잡하게 되는 가장 큰 원인은 순환과 반복이 이 소설을 지배하고 있기 때문이다. 이 소설의 서사 구조에 있어서 가장 두드러지는 특징은, 소설의 마지막 부분에서 이야기가 끝나는 것이 아니라, 바로 그 끝나는 지점에서 다시 처음으로 돌아가서 이야기가 되풀이된다는 점이다. 코야가의 동소마나를 화자가 시작하는 것이 곧 이 소설의 처음인데, 화자는 왜 동소마나를 하는지, 어떤 상황에서 하는 것인지를 알려주지 않는다. 그리고 소설의 마지막에 화자는 비로소 왜 코야가의 동소마나가 필요한지를 알려주며 동소마나를 시작한다. 동시에 이야기는 다시 앞으로 되돌아가서 다시 시작된다. 이처럼 소설은 처음과 끝이 서로 호응하면서 커다란 원형 고리를 만들어 순환 형태를 이룬다. 또한 소설은 중간중간에 많은 에피소드들을 이야기하면서 계속 서사 고리를 만들어 가면서 반복을 되풀이한다. 이야기는 앞으로 계속 나가지를 못하고 어느 정도 나가다가 다시 뒤로 되돌아감을 반복한다. 본 연구는 이와 같은 순환과 반복 구조가 어떻게 이루어지는지, 그리고 그 의미가 무엇인지를 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다.

A. Kourouma``s En attendant le vote des betes sauvage ( Waiting for the wild beasts to vote ) takes the form of a donsomana, traditional Malinke epic song. The donsomana is a eulogy, a literary form whose aim is to celebrate the actions of the heroic hunters and heroes of every kind. This epic song is narrated by Bingo, a west African griot-storyteller. Over the course of six nights, Bingo tells the life story of Koyaga, President and Dictator of the Republic of the Gulfe. In short, this novel can be called a biography of Koyaga. By the way, we must remark that his life story is not narrated chronologically. The structure of the novel is completely distorted. The focus of this paper is to examine such a peculiar form of the novel : circular structure. First of all, let us pay attention to the title which is not a complete sentence. The formula "En attendant(Waiting)···" has to be completed by a principal clause. The perfect sense of the title will not be revealed until the novel is finished. The title, which corresponds to the end of the novel, constitutes a circle. There is also another circular form in the text. The beginning of the novel is linked to its end. When the novel ends, the story begins again. Let us explain this. This novel begins with the donsomana narrated by Bingo. But Bingo does not say the events which led to the present situation of the enunciation. He keeps quiet about the profound motivation of the recitation of Koyaga``s donsomana. The reader will not realize this motivation until the novel ends. This novel ends with Koyaga``s troubled regime : protests of students and government workers against unemployment, and finally the national conference of 1991. Koyaga comes to a crisis. For the restoration of his regime, Koyaga must have his purificatory rite as a master hunter, his cathartic donsomana recounted by Bingo, a chronicler of hunters. So, Bingo narrates Koyaga``s donsomana and the story begins again. The story of this novel moves forth and back in a systematic and recurrent cycle. We will examine, in this paper, the mechanism and the meanings of this circular structure.
