폴란드를 대표하는 시인이자 1996년 노벨 문학상 수상자이기도 한 비스와바 쉼보르스카(Wisława Szymborska: 1923~2012)는 생전에 마지막 시집 『여기』(Tutaj, 2009)를 출간했고, 이후 2012년, 시인이 세상을 떠난 뒤 완성작과 미완성 육필원고를 묶은 유고시집 『충분하다』(Wystarczy, 2012)가 출간되었다. 52) 사물이나 현상을 함부로 재단하거나 단정지으려 하지 않고, 고정관념을 과감히 벗어던진채, 투철한 성찰의 과정을 거쳐 대상의 본질에 접근하고자 했던 쉼보르스카의 고유한 개성은 시인이 남긴 마지막 두 권의 시집에서도 어김없이 빛을 발한다. 전작들과의 연관성 및 상호텍스트성(inter-textuality)에 주목하여 이 두 권의 시집에서 되풀이되고 있는 반복적인 주요 모티브들이 무엇인지 살펴본 결과, 쉼보르스카는 존재의 유한성에 대한 자각, 기억의 한계를 통해 드러나는 삶의 모호함, 개인과 역사의 상관관계에 대한 성찰, 만물을 포용하는 생명 중심적 사고에 각별한 관심을 갖고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 쉼보르스카는 특정한 모티브를 반복적으로 사용함으로써 기존에 발표했던 선행 텍스트 들을 소화하고, 변용하고, 발전시켜 나갔다. 또한 동일한 모티브를 창조적으로 변주하는 고유한 수사법을 사용하여 일관된 의미망을 구축함으로써 독자들에게 익숙한 전작들의 이미지를 적절하게 활용하여 의미 전달의 효율성을 극대화시켰다.

Wisława Szymborska (1923~2012), a Polish poet and Nobel prize laureate (1996), published her last regular collection of poems Here (Tutaj). Then in 2012, her posthumous collection of poems Enough (Wystarczy) was published, which bounded together completed works and unfinished manuscripts of her own handwriting after her death. The last two selected poems well show the idiosyncratic artistry of Szymborska who didn’t want to judge or conclude things or phenomena at random but tried to reach the essence of the object through the process of deep reflection without stereotype or prejudice. This thesis looked into seeking motifs shown repeatedly in these two books of poems by taking note of the connection and inter-textuality and self-reflexiveness with her earlier works. The result showed what had engrossed Szymborska was self-awareness of the finiteness of creatures, ambiguity of life revealed through the limits of memory, reflections on the correlation between an individual and history, and life-oriented way of thinking that embraces all beings. Szymborska successfully maximized the efficiency of conveying meanings to the readers by repeating particular motives in proper use of the images from her earlier works. She also made a creative variation by developing and changing the same motif in other various ways through the process of putting it into poems.
