제주사람들의 삶과 생각을 반영하며 전해 내려온 제주전설은 문화자산으로서 의 높은 가치등 지역뿐만 아니라 이야기 유산으로서의 가치도 지닌다. 본 연구는 제주에 있는 ‘전설’과 ‘전설지’를 조사 연구하고 DB화하여 마을 유산으로서의 보 전과 활용을 위한 기본 자료로 삼기 위함이다. 그 유형은 인물전설, 역사전설, 풍수전설, 자연전설로 분류되고 있는데, 특히 관련 전설지는 개발을 통해 발전이 가능한 잠재적 자원들이다. 제주의 인물전설은 ‘날개 달린 아기장수’(큰 힘을 가진 젊은 소년이나 아기), 충효자, 열녀에 관한 이야기들이 대부분이다. 역사전설은 역사적 인물이 실재 사 건을 반영하여 포함하고 있고, 풍수전설은 양택지, 음택지, 풍수사 호종단(제주의 물혈과 지혈을 끊기 위해 중국에서 보낸 유명한 풍수 전문가)에 관한 것이다. 자 연전설은 한라산, 자연물에 대한 특수 현상, 지질적 조건들 그리고 자연물에 대 한 기원 등으로 구성된다. 현재 전해지고 있는 전설과 ‘전설지’의 소재지를 홍보하여 지역주민들이 주체 가 되어 지속적 전승이 되도록 하고 이야기와 관련된 ‘전설지’ 연구 관리의 일환으로 제주특별자치도 지정 ‘기념물’ 등의 문화재로 지정한 후 보전할 가치가 크 다. 또한 제주전설 중에 대표적인 것을 선정하여 접근성이 쉽도록 편찬 보급하는 일이 필요하고, 교육 기관에서 학습 자료로 활용할 수 있도록 하는 방법 모색도 시급하다. 인물, 역사, 풍수, 자연 전설과 관련한 전설지의 인문적 가치발견과 자연경관 자원화가 필요한데, 제주도 풍수전설이나 자연전설 관련 ‘전설지’는 땅의 의미를 더하여 제주의 생태 환경과 함께 ‘생명의 땅’이라는 감성을 심는 지역민들의 가치창출에 대한 노력도 있어야한다.
There are many folk tales which have been handed down, reflecting Jeju people’s lives and thoughts. Among these, legends are evidence of the value of story heritage. They are not only worth being preserved and passed down, but they also have high value as cultural resources. The purpose of this study is to research ‘legends’ and ‘legend sites’ around Jeju Island and make a database to serve as the foundation for village heritage preservation and utilization. Types of legends were classified according to figures, history, feng shui, and natural legends. The existence of the legend sites were investigated, and the possibility of preserving as well as passing down the legends were checked. Stories were identified as village resources by developing their potential for legend storytelling marketing. The themes of ‘figure legends’ are mostly relating to Agijangsu (a baby or a young boy with great strength), filial duty, fidelity, and loyalty. Most of the stories contain an apologue of sons and daughters who served their parents devotedly, and wives who died after their husbands or maintained chastity. ‘History legends’ reflect real figures and events in history, embodying historic figures and events. Feng shui legends relate to propitious sites for graves or houses, interpreting legends of Ho Jongdan (who was sent by a Chinese emperor to Jeju to break the vein of water and land), famous feng shui experts, feng shui history, geography, and more. Natural legends explain the formation of terrain features based on Halla Mountain, as well as peculiar phenomena of natural objects, geographic conditions, and origins of natural objects. In regard to preservation and sustainable succession. It is required to establish identity through a complete change in the mind set on the periphery. In establishing the Jeju vision, the periphery is significant, and it can be found in the legends of ‘a strong-powered baby with wings,’ and men and women of great Representative stories among the Jeju legends have to be selected, published, and distributed. In addition, they should be made use of as learning materials in educational institutions. With regards to ‘legends’ and ‘legend sites’ utilization, ‘Legend sites’ relating to Jeju feng shui or natural legends add meaning to the area. Along with Jeju ecological environment, the image of ‘Land of Life’ can generate value for tourism. Utilize the landscape of ‘legend sites’ relating to figures, history, feng shui, natural legends to vitalize the local storytelling industry, investigate and discover resource materials, look up the value and meanings of the stories, and push ahead with plan, development, and creation. Utilize the sources of legends through storytelling(stage performance, festivals, broadcasts, movies, music, infra-industry, cartoons, animations, characters, commercial, e-learning, publication, and more) Jeju’s tourism industry should be a cultural industry, but instead of commercializing culture, the industry should aim to let the world know our true culture through communication of culture.
