본 연구는 미국으로 유입된 조선족 이주자들이 기존에 형성되어 있던 로스앤젤레스 코리아타운 내에 정착하여 어떤 차별적인 민족경관을 만들어가는지를 한국인 및 중국인 비조선족 이주자들과의 민족간 관계의 측면에서 분석하고 있다. 조선족은 중국의 동북지역에 정착한 과계(跨界)민족으로서 80년대 이후 중국의 다른 국내 지역은 물론이고, 한국을 비롯한 국경 너머 외국 지역으로 활발하게 이주하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 미국 로스앤젤레스로 진출하여 살아가고 있는 조선족이주자에 초점을 맞추고 있는데, 과거에는 한반도에서 중국 동북지역으로, 지금은 다시 미국으로 국경을 가로질러 이주해간 조선족은 새로운 국가의 정주지역에서 변용된 민족성을 만들어가고 있다. 불법 혹은 서류미비 체류자의 비율이 매우 높은 조선족 이주자 집단은 정치적으로는 중국 국가 정체성을 지니고 있으면서, 자신의 민족적 뿌리인 한반도의 분단 상황을 적극 활용하여 미국에서의 합법적 체류자격을 취득하고 자신들의 다중적 정체성에 기반한 행위주체성을 발휘해가고 있다. 이러한 특수한 정체성을 형성해 가면서 조선족 이주자들은 서로 떨어져 위치하고 있는 코리아타운과 차이나타운을 연결시켜주는 촉매역할도 하고 있다.
This study aims to explain the socio-spatiality of ethnic landscapes constructed by Korean-Chinese and ethnic relations by the various groups of immigrants around Los Angeles Koreatown and Chinatown. As a transnational ethnic group living in the northeastern part of China, the Korean-Chinese has made themselves emigrating into the other parts of China and out to the foreign countries at larger scale since 1980s. Focusing the Korean-Chinese migrants in Los Angeles, USA, this study traces the transformation of their ethnicity in terms of cultural, economic, and political relations with the groups of Korean migrants, Chinese migrants, and the mainstream society. The Korean-Chinese migrant group shows higher percentage of illegal or undocumented migrants than any other migrant groups, and thus makes an sincere efforts to legal status of immigration visa. This efforts often lead them to make active use of the political division of the Korean peninsular because the US government is very much willing to give the refugees out of North Korea the asylum visa. This kind of liminal positionality has been utilized as a survival strategy in the new destination of the USA and has developing into multiple and flexible identities. In this regards, they often play roles of linking the spaces of Koreatown and Chinatown.
