During the colonial times, Chinese expatriates in Keijo(Seoul) were depicted as drug traffickers, gamblers, clandestine prostitution racketeers, and gangsters, and their residential areas were portrayed as illegal dens. This author argues that these discursive construction on Chinese and their residential area were a kind of a ``imaginative geographies`` of colonial Koreans who strived to construct Korean modern identity. Under this dualistic identity frame, Chinese expatriates and their residential areas were unavoidably essentialized as illegal Other. Moreover, as the expansive reproduction of the Chinese discourse, colonized plebeian Koreans acquired negative view on Chinese expatriates and did xenophobic violence to them in 1931, and expelled Chinese residential area situated in the city center in the name of urban modernization redevelopment. It is the dark side of dualistic modernity that the discursive formation of the imaginative geographies of Other foreigner`s residential area which has been constructed over 90 years in the name of modernization of South Korea. This dualistic discourse should be dissolved and absorbed into the cultural pluralism to construct multi-cultural society in South Korea.
