본 연구의 목적은 제주 방언 50대 화자를 대상으로 단모음의 실현 양상을 산출실험을 통하여 파악하고 지각 실험을 함께 병행하여 제주 방언 단모음의 변화 양상을 산출과 지각의 측면에서 파악하는 것이다. 이를 위해 총 20명의 제주 방언50대 여성 피험자를 대상으로 산출 실험을 실시하였으며, 총 40명의 피험자들을대상으로 자극을 만들어 지각 실험을 실시하였다. 산출 실험 결과, 제주 방언 50 대 후반 여성 화자들의 경우 /ㆍ/를 /ㅗ/와 변별하여 조음하고 있으나, 제주 방언50대 초반 여성 화자들은 /ㆍ/와 /ㅗ/를 구별하여 조음하지 않은 것으로 나타났다. 그에 반해 제주 방언 50대 남성 화자들의 경우 /ㆍ/와 /ㅗ/를 구별하여 조음하고있어서 /ㆍ/의 소실이 제주 방언 50대 여성 화자들에게서 우선적으로 나타나는 음변화 현상인 것을 확인하였다. 그리고 이러한 경향성은 /ㅡ/의 전설화에서도 확인할 수 있었다. 지각 실험 결과, 제주 방언 50대 남성 화자들의 경우 /ㆍ/와 다른 모음들의 음성적 차이를 듣고 정확하게 구분하고 있었으며, 50대 후반 남성 화자들이 초반 남성 화자들에 비해 좀 더 정확하게 구분하고 있음을 확인하였다. 하지만제주 방언 50대 초반 여성 화자들의 경우 /ㆍ/를 /ㅗ/ 혹은 /ㅓ/와 변별하지 못하는것으로 나타났다. 이러한 사실은 현재 제주 방언 50대 초반 여성 화자들이 /ㆍ/를음소로서 지니지 못하고 있음을 확인해주는 것이다. 그리고 제주 방언 50대 후반여성 화자들은 /ㆍ/를 /ㅗ, ㅓ/와 구분하여 지각하고 있어서, 제주 방언 50대 여성 화자들의 경우 세대 내에서의 차이가 있음을 확인할 수 있었다.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the production and perception of vowels in Jeju dialect and to discuss correlations between production and perception. For this purpose, two experiments were conducted and data was gathered from Jeju dialect speakers in their 50s. The result of production experiment was that production of vowels little differences in same generation: It is revealed in this paper that Jeju dialect female spekers in their early 50s use the seven vowels of /ㅣ, E, ㅡ, ㅓ, ㅏ, ㅜ, ㅗ/, those spekers in their late 50s use the eight vowels of /ㆍ/ plus the seven vowels. The degree of frontness of /ㅡ/ in early 50s is higher than late 50s. Also, the result of perception experiment was that perception of vowels little differences in same generation: Jeju dialect male subjects in their 50s perceive /ㆍ/ and /ㅗ, ㅓ/ differnetly; The late 50s perceived these vowels better than early 50s. Jeju dialect female subjects in their late 50s perceive / ㆍ/ and /ㅗ, ㅓ/ differnetly, but among the subjects in their early 50s. These results confirmed that there was a correlation between production and perception in Jeju dialect.
