본 연구는 북한이탈주민의 개신교와의 만남의 의미에 대해 현상학적 질적 방법론을 사용하여 북한이탈주민이 직접 말하는 내러티브에 대한 심층기술(thick description)을 통해 북한이탈 주민의 목소리를 담아내고 개신교 교회가 이들에게 어떤 의미이며, 남한사회 정착에 교회가 어떻게 작용하는가를 성찰하는 것이다. 기독교와의 만남은 이들에게 기독교를 통한 남한사회로의 입사식과 같은 과정으로서, 탈북과정의 트라우마를 치유하고, 두고 온 가족들에 대한 그리움과 걱정, 그리고 과거 등을 덮고 인생의 새 장을 시작할 수 있는 레토릭을 제공함을 알 수 있었다. 북에 관한 모든 것을 부정해야하는 문제와, 지원금과 선교에 얽힌 갈등상황에 대한 이야기는 연구 참여자들의 기독교 경험 서사에서 공통적으로 중요한 의미를 차지하는 것으로 나타났다. 이에 따라, 유일하게 북한이탈주민에게는 다문화주의가 적용되지 않고 있는 점을 중심으로 소통의 문제를, 그리고 물질적 시혜의 선교 방식의 문제 등을 논의한다. 자유로운 신앙 표현이 가능한 열린 교육과, 북한이탈주민의 ‘디아스포라 정체성’이나 ‘이방인’의 자질을 담보하고 있는 존재로서, 그러나 또한 북한이탈주민과 남한 주민이 서로에게 이방인으로서 상호 침투하고 상호 영향을 주어 상호 변화의 긍정적 효과를 낳을 수 있어야함을 제언한다.

The purpose of this study is to catch the experiences of North Korean defectors’ encountering with Christianity, which is narrated by themselves and try to interpret them by thick description putting in proper contexts without losing its complexity through phenomenological qualitative method. By doing so, it is to speculate that what the Protestant Church does mean to them and reversely how North Korean defectors affect Korean church. Their experiences of encountering with Christianity is like passage of initiation rite(separation-liminalityreincorporation) to South Korean society and provide the rhetoric of starting a new life after overcoming the worry and missing of family left in North Korean and the trauma produced from the route of escape. Two issues appears saliently from all interviewees: 1) pressure to refuse and reject all North Korea related things; 2) financial support on behalf of becoming a Christian. Thus, the study argue about these issues with the concepts of cultural relativism and the gift exchange, ‘diaspora identity’, ‘hybridity,’ and ‘stranger’. From the arguments, this study suggests that North Korean defectors and the Church in South Korea could affect each other interactively leading to positive change to each other.
