This study was investigated to test that individuals with high social anxiety have the interpretation bias for self performances in social situation. Interpretation bias for self performance is the tendency to interpret self performance in negative manner. For this purpose, twelve high socially anxious participants and thirteen low socially anxious participants engaged in a public speech and completed several measures of self performance including percieved speech performance, general performance scale, and general anxiety scale. Independent observers rated participants` speech performances and anxiety. As a result, high socially anxious participants reported significantly lower quality of speech performances and higher anxiety than did low socially anxious participants. In summary, Individuals with social anxiety negatively interpret themselves` performances in social situations. This Study would help counselors to effectively treat individuals with social anxiety and clients to understand themselves` interpretation biases.
