지능지수는 정상분포곡선에 기초하고 있다. 따라서 지능지수에 의존한 정신연령 산출은 정상분포곡선에 기초한 직선형 구조로 제시되어 있다. 이 연구에서는 정상분포곡선과는 표준편차가 멀어져 있는 정신지체아동의 정신연령에 대한 공식을 제안하고자, 정신지체아동의 지능지수, 생활연령, 정신연령, 그리고 어휘연령의 관계를 분석하였다. 전국의 24개 장애아 어린이집 또는 장애아동 조기교육 기관에 재학하고 있는 정신지체아동 319명의 K-ABC와 한국표준수용어휘력 검사 결과를 자료로 활용하였다. 정신지체아동도 연령별 증가에 따라 발달의 방향성이 보장되고 있으나, 최소 1년 6개월에서 2년의 경과에 따라서 유의미한 차이를 보인다. 정신지체아동의 어휘연령은 정신연령보다 1년 이상 지체되고 있으나, 지능지수, 생활연령, 그리고 어휘연령의 상관관계는 높다. 따라서 자료 분석을 근거로 지능지수와 생활연령에 기초한 어휘연령의 산출 공식이 제안되었다. 결론적으로 이 연구에서는 기존의 직선형 공식은 정신지체아동의 정신연령 산출에 문제점이 있음을 지적하였고, 어휘연령에 기초한 교수학습 설계를 위한 시사점을 제시하였다.

Traditionally the formula, (mental age/chronical age) × 100 = IQ has been used to calculate the mental age. The purpose of this study was to suggest a formula to calculate the mental age for children with mental retardation based on the intelligent quotient and vocabulary age. 319 children with mental retardation were participated for this study. The research materials were the K-ABC and the Korean Standard Reception Vocabulary Test. One-Way ANOVA and regression were utilized for this study. The results of this study were that: (a) the mental age based on traditional method was one more year higher than those of the vocabulary age. The meaningful development for children with mental retardation was indicated after one and half through two years; (b) The intelligent quotient, mental age, and vocabulary age have high correlation. Therefore the vocabulary age was a scale to suppose for the mental age; and (c) The formula on the vocabulary age based on intelligent quotient was suggested. However the shapes of the formula according to intelligent ability were different. Therefore this study concluded that the linear formula to calculate the mental age is not adequate for children with mental retardation.
