The objectives of this study were to compare differences in grammaticality judgment and error correction abilities between children in ordinary and in multicultural families and to compare development of grammatical abilities according to ages between two groups. Subject groups were 15 children from ordinary families and 15 children chronolo gically age(CA) matched from multicultural families. Their age ranged from 6 to 8 year olds. Grammaticality judgment tasks contained judgement on postposition, conjunctive ending and tense, and each task consisted of 24 grammatical and nongrammatical questions. Error correction tasks consisted of a total 36 questions about nongrammatical sentences. The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, children in multicultural families showed statistically lower scores in grammaticality judgment and error correction than children in ordinary families. Second, children in ordinary and children in multicultural families showed similar grammatical development sequence in grammatical morphemes, regardless of this difference. Third, grammaticality judgment ability of children from both groups was not statistically significant according to age. These results suggest that grammaticality judgment can be a good tool to evaluate language development of preschool-aged children who are preparing school and to monitor language development of children in multifultural families.
