중도 정신지체인과 자폐성장애인은 자기표현의 제한으로 사회참여와 자기결정을 하는데 있어 많은 어려움을 겪게 된다. 이들의 독특한 의사소통 행동을 이해한다는 것은 사회의 구성원으로 서로가 더불어 살아가기 위한 하나의 소통의 고리를 찾아 교류를 할 수 있음을 의미한다. 따라서 본 연구의 목적은 정신지체인과 자폐성장애인의 비상징적 의사소통 행동 평가척도를 개발하기 위하여 평가문항을 타당화하고 유형화하는 것이다. 이를 위해 선행 연구에서 개발된 비상징적 의사소통 행동 예비 평가문항을 정신지체인과 자폐성장애인을 담당하는 전국의 특수교사와 언어치료사 257명에게 문항 중요도 조사를 하여 평균과 표준편차, 문항분석, 탐색적 요인분석을 통해 타당화하였다. 그 결과, 정신지체인과 자폐성장애인의 비상징적 의사소통 행동 평가 문항의 유형은 담화 기능 5문항, 의사소통 기능 15문항, 의사소통 형태-동작형 5문항, 의사소통 형태-응시 및 몸짓형 6문항, 의사소통 형태-표정형 6문항, 의사소통 형태-성인 의존형 4문항으로 총 6개 영역의 41개 문항이었다. 이러한 결과는 향후 중도 장애인들의 공통적인 비상징적 의사소통 행동과 장애유형에 따른 차이점을 탐지해 낼 수 있는 평가도구의 개발에 기초 자료를 제공할 것이다.

The purpose of the study was to validate and categorize assessment index of nonsymbolic communication for individuals with severe mental retardation and autism spectrum disorders (AINC-MR&ASD). Raw data from a previous study were used. Preliminary assessment items were used to conduct a survey of the level of importance (5 Likert Measure) for each item. Data from 257 special education teachers and speech therapists for individuals with mental retardation and autism spectrum disorders across the country were validated by means, standard deviation, item analysis, and factor analysis. As a result, the items were categorized by six areas of Discourse Function, Communicative Function, Communicative Forms - Actions, Communicative Forms - Eye Gaze & Gestures, Communicative Forms - Facial Expression, and Communicative Forms - Dependance on Adults and 41 assessment items in all. The results would be used as ground data to develop evaluation tools for discovering common and different aspects of nonsymbolic communication among disability types for individuals with severe and multiple disabilities.
