This is a short report of a small questionnaire research on the difference in the sense of politeness between Japanese and Korean Languages. Two tasks of writing a full conversation between two adults under two different situations were given to native Japanese speakers and native Korean speakers. Similar conversation patterns were found both in Japanese and Korean languages under the situation, where a men/lady on a train platform is asked by a traveler if the train pulling in goes to a certain station, Different patterns were observed, however, under the other situation, where a man/lady is asked by his/her friend to give him/her a small amount of money for a bottle of beverage sold in a vending machine. A closer examination of the difference in the conversation pattern reveals that Japanese language has more variety of showing politeness than Korean, which shows that there is a difference in the evaluation of “adequacy” of making a request among friends between Japanese and Korean.
