본 연구는 음악활동에서 나타나는 자폐범주성장애 유아의 의사표현행동에 대한 의미를 알아보기 위해 질적연구 방법 중 참여관찰법으로 실시하였다. 본 연구에 참여하는 자폐범주성장애유아는 3명의 남자유아로 장애전문어린이집에 재적하고 있다. 연구 결과 로봇과의 음악활동에서 나타나는 자폐범주성장애 유아의 의사표현행동으로는 스스로 로봇에게 다가가 탐색하는자발적 탐색과 적극적 관심으로 나타났다. 음악활동이 거듭 될수록 자폐범주성장애 유아들은 로봇과 참여교사에게 자신의 신체와 언어를 활용하여 적극적으로 자신의도를 전달하려는 의사교류행동으로 변화되어 나타났다. 이러한 연구 결과가 시사하는 것은 첫째, 로봇과 함께 하는 음악활동은 자폐범주성장애 유아들에게 다양한 방법으로 자신의 의도를 타인에게 표현해보는 기회를 제공해 줄 뿐만 아니라 로봇과 참여교사의 표현행동을 관찰해 보는 경험을 통해 타인의 행동의 의미를 이해하는데 긍정적인 영향을 미칠 것이다. 또한 자폐범주성장애 유아에게 친근한 이미지를 가진 로봇이라는 매개물을 활용한 음악활동은 자폐범주성장애 유아의 의사소통을 촉진하는 매개물로서의 활용가능성에 대한 효과를 살펴보았다는데 의의가 있다.

This study set out to investigate the meanings of intention expression behavior of young children with the autism spectrum disorder in musical activities and employed participant observation of the qualitative methodologies. Three young boys that had the autism spectrum disorder and were attending a special childcare center for young children with a disability participated in the study. As a result, the young children with the autism spectrum disorder showed such intention expression behavior in musical activities with robots as voluntary inquiry expression of approaching and investigating robots and active interest expression. As musical activities continued on, the young children with the disorder engaged in intention exchange behavior of trying to convey their interest in musical activities actively to the robots and participant teachers through their bodies and words. Those research findings have the following implications: first, musical activities with robots will not only provide young children with the autism spectrum disorder with an opportunity to express their intention in various ways, but also have positive influences on their understanding of the meanings of others’ actions through the experience of observing the expressive behavior of robots and participant teachers. Moreover, musical activities with the medium of robot, which has a familiar image to young children with the autism spectrum disorder, are significant in that they examine the effects of robot as an applicable medium to promote the communication of young children with the disorder.
