This study aims at providing educational implications for secondary writing education and evaluation in Korea. By analyzing on characteristics of the writing assessment in Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium in U.S., this study seek to reveal how we enhance writing assessment in secondary education in relation to teaching and learning in writing classroom. One characteristic discovered in SBAC writing assessment is to develop and use “performance test” to evaluate students` writing competencies in the real world. The other innovative characteristic of SBAC items in writing assessment is to present “technology-enhanced item” to assess students` writing as well as computer competencies. Based on these, this study provided the following implications: 1) needed to enhance students` writing competencies by develop meaningful items relavant to students` lives. 2) needed to cultivate teaching and learning environment for writing education in which students can practice reading and writing by using computer in class. Consequently, this study suggests the idea that writing assessment should be implemented in relation to writing teaching and learning in class.
