장애인교육학에 있어서 신경심리학은 매우 중요한 위치를 차지하며 이것은 특히 장애진단과정에 있어서 그러하다. 장애진단은 장애인교육학의 영역에서 가장 뜨거운 감자라고 해도 과언이 아닐 정도로 장애예방, 장애조기진단 및 치료 등의 분야에서 여전히 많은 논쟁이 진행되고 있다. 또한 장애진단이라는 것이 당사자의 삶에 있어서 단지 치료나 교육을 위해 일회적으로 진단(판단)되는 데에 그치는 것이 아니라, 일평생(교육, 생활 영역) 계속해서 진행되는 연속적인 과정이라는 점을 감안했을 때, 장애진단방법론은 장애인교육학 분야에서 지속적으로 관심을 가지고 연구해 나가야 할 분야이다. 하지만 국내외적으로 이러한 논의들은 여전히 미진한 실정이다. 이 연구는 이러한 맥락에서 작년 타계한 Sacks의 신경 심리방법론을 살펴봄으로써, 그의 연구가 장애인교육학의 질적 제고에 기여한 바를 되짚어 보려고 한다. Sacks는 기존의 장애진단이 객관적인 진단이라는 명분 아래 사람(당사자)과 장애 혹은 질병을 이원화 하여 인간 소외를 조장하고 있는 데 대하여 비판하면서 ‘주체성의 신경학’이라는 새로운 인간 이해 중심의 진단방법론을 제안하였다. 그의 이러한 발상은 문화역사학파의 전통 속에서 특히 Lurija에게서 많은 영향을 받았다. 이 연구는 이러한 입장에서 Sacks의 주체성의 신경학의 내용과 그 구체적인 사례를 소개하여, 이러한 방식의 진단작업이 장애인교육학 발전에 또 장애인 진단과정 발전에 어떤 가치를 가지는지 제안하고자 하였으며, 그의 이러한 발상이 현대적 의미에서 ‘신경인문학’ 영역의 발굴로 언급 될 수 있음을 논의하고 향후 보다 활발한 실천적 연구가 필요함을 주장하였다.
Neuropsychology plays a crucial role in Disability Studies in Education, especially in diagnosing disabilities. Disability diagnosis is the most controversial area in disability education as it has brought about the most heated arguments over prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of disability. It is also a complex process that requires an extensive and prolonged assessment. The diagnosis, therefore, should be made for a lifetime, which means development of a wider variety of diagnosis methods is needed both at home and abroad. This study, in this context, aims to examine the contribution of Sacks’ neuropsychological approach to disability studies in education. Sacks, who passed away last year, had suggested a new, humanist method of diagnosis - what he called ‘Neurology of Identity”. His criticism on current practices of disability diagnosis as a source of alienation is influenced by perspectives of cultural-historical psychologists, especially Alexander Luria. Sacks criticized that the so-called objective scientific diagnosis regards individuals and their diseases as being separate, even binary. In this study, the concepts of Sacks’ ‘Neurology of Identity’ and his case studies were introduced; the meanings of this new approach have in the field of disability education and disability diagnosis were explained; the viability of his concepts in the modern Neuro Humanities was discussed; the need for further research was suggested.
