본 연구에서는 정상아의 관심공유 행동의 발달을 그 형태와 기능, 그리고 언어 발달과 관련지어 살펴본 후, 자폐아의 관심공유의 특성과 그 원인에 대해 논의하였다. 이어서 문헌에 나타나 있는 자폐아의 관심공유 행동을 중재하는 방법이나 프로그램을 비교적 자세하게 소개하였다. 이 때, 프로그램의 효과에 영향을 미칠 수 있는 변인 즉, 프로그램의 유형, 부모와 형제자매를 중재자로 활용하는 문제, 중재의 강도와 관련된 이슈들을 중점적으로 살펴보았다. 그 결과, 아주 구조화된 강도 높은 행동 수정 절차 뿐아니라 발달주의 접근법에 기초한 아동 중심 중재도 자폐아에게 관심공유 행동을 가르치는데 성공적이었다. 자폐아 부모와 형제자매를 중재자로 참여시킨 결과, 자폐아의 관심공유 기술의 유지 및 일반화에 도움이 되었다. 중재의 강도가 효과에 미치는 영향에 대해서는 연구 결과들이 일치하지 않아 아직 어떤 결론을 내릴 수가 없었다. 후속연구에서는 효과적인 관심공유 중재와 관련된 변인들을 더 심도 있고 다양하게 탐색하는 노력이 필요해 보인다.

The developmental course of joint attention in typical children and its relationship with language development was firstly described. Impaired development of joint attention is a core feature of children with autism which underlies the abnormal development of later emerging social-communication behaviors. Teaching young children with autism to engage in joint attention may lead to collateral increases in other non-targeted social-communication behavior. Thus, intervention to develop joint attention skills should be the earliest step in early intervention for children with autism. Drawing on the joint attention literature, a set of variables that could affect on the effects of social interactive interventions designed to increase joint attention skills of young children with autism were discussed. Not only highly structured, intensive behavior modification procedures, but also child-centered intervention based on developmental approach was successful in teaching joint attention skills for children with autism. Parent and sibling mediated intervention has been shown to be a very effective method for promoting generalization and maintenance of joint attention skills in children with autism. The impact of the intensity of intervention on the effectiveness of intervention is still controversial. The critical variables that may relate to the effects of joint attention intervention may need to be studied in future research.
