본 연구는 기존의 정신지체 특성을 구성주의적 관점에서 재조명해 보는 데 목적이있다. 이를 위하여 구성주의에서 강조하고 있는 모든 인간은 자신의 고유한 능력과 자원으로 현실을 구성해 나가며, 자기 나름대로의 주관적 의미를 부여할 수 있는 능력이 있다는 인식론에서 정신지체의 특성을 재해석하였다. 이러한 관점은 현재의 부정적 의미에서 해석되고 있는 정신지체의 특성을 비판적 시각에서 바라볼 수 있게 해 줌은 물론 정신지체의 가능성을 발견하게 해 주는 논리적 명분을 제공해 주는 논리적 근거가 된다고 본다. 구성주의 관점에서 재해석할 수 있는 정신지체의 특성은 그들은 고유한 능력과 자원의 소유자로서 자기 현실을 나름대로 독특하게 구성해 나갈 수 있는 존재이기에 상대적 비교에 의한 열등한 존재자가 아닌 모든 인간의 범주에 포함되는 일환으로서 고유한 내면의 세계를 발현하도록 격려 받아야 하는 존재임이 분명하다.

The Purpose of the study was to review characteristics of mental retardation in point of view of constructivism. For the purpose, the study embossed the epistemological position that all human beings emphasized by constructivism construct reality with their own ability and resources and have the ability to grant a subjective meaning. On the basis of that, the study criticized understanding about the present academic world’s negative and one-way characteristics of mental retardation and emphasized on that we should recognize and understand characteristics of mental retardation based on possibility by justice and grounds of constructivism. Synthesizing the study’s results and discussion, they were as follows. We should understand about all human beings in advance in the point of view of constructivism that they can construct reality uniquely with their own ability and resources without having relations with whether they have mental retardation or not. Also, we should encourage each individual internal world with a special ability and should have a modest understanding to recover human unity which can share with all people, escaping from such an illiberal viewpoint that one was superior and another was inferior in any objective and uniformed conformity. The study emphasized that they were an intrinsic attribute to understand true characteristics of mental retardation based on human consciousness.
