우리나라의 보조테크놀로지 분야는 미개척 단계라고 하여도 과언이 아니다. 미국이나 캐나다와 같은 북미의 국가들은 세계에서 보조테크놀로지가 매우 발달하여 장애인들이 일상생활에서 당면하는 여러 가지 물리적ㆍ환경적 장애물을 극복하는데 큰 도움을 주고 있다. 그들 나라의 장애인들이 오늘날처럼 그러한 보조테크놀로지 서비스에 손쉽게 접근할 수 있는 수준으로 발전하기까지 그와 관련된 법적 지원체계와 서비스 전달체계의 확립이 없이는 불가능하다.본 연구에서는 특별히 현재 우리의 상황에서 보조테크놀로지 관련 법률의 제정이 필요한 이유를 자세하게 살펴보고, 보조테크놀로지 법률 제정과 관련하여 큰 방향에서 고려되어야 할 점과 구체적으로 검토되어야 할 사안에 대해 논의하고자 한다.

Assistive technology field in Korea is just at the beginning stage. On the other hand, North American countries such as U.S.A, and Canada are world-mostly developed in the assistive technology so that their people with disabilities get a lot of help from assistive technology service in overcoming the various physical and environmental obstacles met in their daily life of living. It is impossible without the establishment of related legislative support systems and service delivery systems that their people with disabilities can access the assistive technology services as easily as today. This study is to look into the reason why the assistive technology related legislation is required especially in our present situation and to discuss about the issues to be considered in such legislative activities broadly and to be reviewed in detail.
