좌편 무시(neglect)는 우반구 손상 환자에게서 나타나는 증상으로, 좌 시야(left visual field)에 제시되는 자극을 인지하여 반응하는데 장애가 있으며, 주의(attention)장애로 분류된다. 이 연구에서는 시각 및 청각자극을 통한 심상치료가 좌편 무시 현상을 감소시키는지를 조사하였다. 피험자는 실험 집단인 좌편 무시 환자 4명이었다. 실험방법은 피험자에게 시각자극 혹은 청각자극을 제시하고 난 다음, 그와 관련된 심상치료 (visual & auditory mental imaging)를 주 5회 30분씩 35회기 동안 실시하였다. 치료전과 후에 치료의 효과가 있는지를 조사하였다. 치료의 효과를 검증하기 위해 선 나누기, 별 지우기, 선 지우기, 종 지우기, 그림 베끼기, 시계 그리기를 사용하였다. 연구 결과, 모든 피험자들은 선 나누기, 별 지우기, 선 지우기, 종 지우기, 그림 베끼기, 시계 그리기 과제에서 좌편 무시 현상의 감소를 나타내었다. 이러한 연구 결과는 시각 및 청각자극을 통한 심상치료가 좌편 무시를 감소시키며, 이에 따라 치료에 효과적임을 암시한다.

Left-neglect is a common neurological symptom resulting from right hemisphere damage. The objective of this study is to assess the effectiveness of mental imaging in the rehabilitation of left-neglect patients. Four subjects with left-neglect participated in the study on a voluntary basis. In task 1, they were presented with visual stimulus photo directly above the response sheet and asked to draw and speak after imaging the picture mentally. In task 2, they were presented with the test items auditorily and asked to draw and speak after imaging the sound mentally. In all conditions, there was no limit in response time. An A-B experimental design was utilized. The results showed that the left-neglect symptoms were dramatically decreased in both task 1 and task 2. The results of the this study suggested that the mental imaging can be effective in treating individuals with left-neglect.
