본 연구는 설문조사에서 응답시간의 분포적 특성과 영향요인, 그리고 실제 분석에서의 활용방안을 실증자료를 이용하여 분석하였다. 전국의 10,371명을 대상으로 한 ‘2013년 정부역할과 삶의 질 통합조사’ 자료를 이용하여 응답시간에 면접자, 소득, 학력, 나이, 성별 직업 등이 미치는 영향과 응답시간이 분석결과에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 응답시간의 분포가 양의 왜도를 갖는 분포를 갖고 있기 때문에 분위회귀분석을 이용하여 응답시간의 영향요인을 분석하였다. 그 결과 문항 당9.34초의 상당히 짧은 응답시간을 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 일부 면접자는 지나치게 많은 수의 설문을 진행하는 경향이 나타났고, 면접자에 따라 응답시간의 차이가 크게 나타나고 있음을 확인했다. 또한 소득, 학력, 나이, 성별, 직업 역시 응답시간에 영향을 미치고 있다. 그러나 본 연구에서는 응답시간이 설문응답 점수 및 신뢰성에 평균적으로는 유의미한 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 다만 일부 문항에 있어서는 응답시간과 응답점수가 큰 상관관계가 있는 것으로 나타났으며, 실제 자료 분석에서는 응답시간 변수가 독립변수 및 종속변수간의 관계에 따라 매개변수, 충돌변수, 도구변수 등으로 활용할 수있음을 제시하였다.

This paper provides the empirical analysis results on the distribution of the survey response time, its impact factors, and the way of its utilization. After employing 10,371 multi-stage stratified random sample, we analyze if a interviewer, age, education, gender, and job affect the length of the survey response time. The analysis results suggest that the response time per question is only 9.34 second and its distribution is positively skewed. In particular, interviewer significantly affects the length of time and personal characteristics of interviewee(age, education, gender, job) are also statistically significant. The other finding suggests that the length of the survey response time, on average, does not affect the response score and reliability, while some questions’ scores are significantly correlated with the response time. Based on these findings, we provide an example how to utilize the response time as a mediator, moderator, and collider.
