본 연구는 정신지체아동과 일반아동의 기초어휘 수용에 관한 발달 정도를 비교 · 분석하여 정신연령에 기초한 기초어휘 발달과의 상관성을 알아보기 위하여 수행되었다. 정신지체아동의 수용어휘 발달은 연령의 증가에 따라 의미 있는 변화가 나타났다. 그리고 일반아동도 연령의 증가에 따라 수용어휘의 발달은 현저한 차이가 있었다. 그러나 정신지체아동의 수용어휘 발달은 정신연령을 기준으로 할 때 일반아동의 연령에 비하여 약 1년 6개월 정도 지체되었다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 정신지체아동의 어휘지도를 위해서 참고하는 정신연령이 일반아동의 연령과 동일하게 적용될 수 없다는 시사점을 제시하였다. 그리고 정신지체아동의 어휘지도를 위해서는 Piaget보다는 Case가 주장한 세분화된 인지발달 단계의 특성에 맞는 지도계획의 수립이 고려 되어야 함을 아울러 제시하였다.

The purpose of this study is to compare and analysis the developmental levels on receptive vocabularies of mental retarded and normal children. One hundred and twenty mental retarded children and one hundred twenty normal children were participate to compare and analysis the levels of receptive vocabularies. One hundred basic vocabularies with picture test were applied for test. The mental retarded children according to increase mental age also develop the levels of the number of the receptive vocabularies, and the normal children indicated high correlations between the number of receptive vocabularies and age. However, the mental retarded children`s mental age did not suggest the relationships with the number of receptive vocabularies. The mental retarded children`s developmental stages on receptive vocabularies delayed about one and half years compared with those of the normal children. Therefore this study concluded that the mental retarded children`s developmental levels on receptive vocabularies do not have any correlations with the mental age which means a yardstick as a cognitive developmental levels. For teaching receptive vocabularies to mental retarded the individual cognitive skills which means the developmental stages based on the levels of receptive vocabularies should be considered, rather than mental retarded children`s mental age itself based on the normal children`s chronical age.
