A Study on the Representation Methods of Disability Discriminatory Expressions in Korean Textbooks

This study investigated perceptions of disability discriminatory expressions, and provided suggestions for representation methods in Korean textbooks. To do so, we selected 60 survey items through a review of Korean language textbooks and previous studies, and examined how adolescents and adults would perceive them in terms of discrimination. The results showed variation in the mean values of perceived discrimination across the items, although the standard deviations were not largely different. Further, a significant age effect was found on the level of perceived discrimination in a number of the expressions for disability. In addition, the level of perceived discrimination varied to an extent depending on linguistic realization patterns. Based on the findings, the study proposes educational directions on the representation of disability discriminatory expressions in Korean textbooks from two perspectives, namely, systematization of examples to raise multi-level awareness of disability discriminatory expressions and development of educational materials to teach linguistic cues intrinsic to disability discriminatory expressions.
