이 글은 제주도 방언에 나타난 말[馬] 부분 명칭과 관련 어휘를 어휘 의미론적으로 고찰하고, 그 의미를 현지 조사 자료와 국어사전, 그리고 방언사전 등을 참고해서 새롭게 규명하였다. 논의 대상으로 삼은 어휘는 제주특별자치도 서귀포시 표선면 가시리 지역에서 말[馬] 문화 관련 어휘를 조사하며 수집한 말 부분 명칭 가운데 특이 어휘 33개다. 논의 결과, 33개의 어휘 가운데 국어사전에 올림말로 올라 있는 어휘는 ``갈기, □총, 접, 전각, 후각, 비피`` 6개였고, 방언사전에는 ``갈기, □갈기, □총, □꼴렝이, 검은지름`` 등 12개 어휘가 올라 있다. ``멘털(멩털), □총지, □꽝, □뻬, □발, 종지발, 대접발, □는베설, □지름, □간, □른세`` 등 21개는 국어사전과 방언사전에 올림말로 올라 있지 않은 어휘다. 이는 그동안 말 관련 어휘 조사가 체계적으로 이루어지지 못했음을 보여주는 것이며, 이로 인하여 논의 대상 어휘에 대응하는 표준어형이 올림말로 올라 있지 않거나 올림말로 소개된 어휘 가운데도 수정 또는 보완 작업이 필요한 뜻풀이가 있었다. 따라서 이 논문은 앞으로 사전 작업을 할 때 문헌 조사 못지않게 현지 조사가 중요하다는 점을 확인시켜 주고 있다. 논의 어휘에 대한 뜻풀이와 용례는 향후 사전 작업 때 귀한 자료로 활용되길 기대한다.

This study is about the names of horse body parts in Jeju dialect and their meanings identified in local research, and in Korean dictionaries, dialect dictionaries, etc. unusual word forms were collected after studying words that describe horse body parts and that are used in horse cultures in Gasi-ri, Pyoseon-myeon, Seogwipo-si, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province. These were compared with those from Korean dictionaries, dialect dictionaries, and dictionaries of Old Korean and were then analyzed. Only 6 words-galgi, molchong, jeop, jeongak, hugak, and bipi-can also be found in Korean dictionaries, while 21 words cannot be found in dialect dictionaries, which means that research on words related to horses has not been systematically conducted yet. This is why standard Korean word forms of some dialect ones are not in Korean dictionaries and some words need to be modified or complemented. This study shows that conducting field surveys is as important as conducting literature research as pre-work. It is believed that the vocabulary and usage handled here could be used as precious materials for pre-work in the future.
