조오현은 승려이자 시인으로서 1968년부터 선심(禪心)을 언어로 옮긴 시와 시조를 창작해왔다. 이 논문은 그의 작품 중 서술시 연작시편인 「절간 이야기」를 중심으로, 조오현 서술시에서 드러나고 있는 복수의 발화 주체들이 빚어내는 소통구조의 역학을 고찰하고 있는 연구이다. 서술 주체와 인물로서 텍스트 내부에 존재하는 다층적 목소리를 발화 주체의 문제로 탐구하고 있으며, 그들의 발화가 텍스트 구조 안에서 수평적으로 존재함으로써 만들어내고 있는 텍스트 소통구조의 역학을 분석하고 있다. 「절간 이야기」는 복수의 발화 주체가 수평적으로 존재하기에 적합한 시적 공간으로서 서술시 장르를 선택하고 있는 선시(禪詩)이다. 그 텍스트 안에서 이야기 내 인물들은 깨달음과 발화의 주체로서 서술주체와 수평적으로 존재하고 있는 양상을 보인다. 이때 서술 주체는 외부의 수신자에게 이야기를 전달한다는 차원에서 텍스트의 발화 주체로 존재하면서도, 인물의 목소리를 자신의 질서에 종속시키지 않고 그대로 옮겨놓는 태도를 드러낸다. 그렇게 하여 서술 주체와 이야기 내 인물은 이야기 층위/텍스트 층위에서 복수의 발화 주체로서 수평적으로 존재하고 있는 것이다. 이는 불교의 불일불이 사상을 구조적으로 형상화한 방식으로도 읽힌다.

This thesis aims to examine the dynamics of the communication structure formed by the multiple main agents of the voices (the subject of speech) in Jo Oh-hyeon`s narrative poems, focusing on the serial poem Story of a Buddhist Temple. The multilayered voices of the text as a narrator and characters were investigated as the problem of a narrator, and the dynamics of the text communication structure created by the lateral existence of their eyes and voices were analyzed. Story of a Buddhist Temple is a Buddhist narrative poem in which each character has his or her own voice through which the character shares his or her own perspective. Therefore, the characters co-exist as main agents. Here, a narrator exists as a voice that describes the whole story of the poem, but does not subordinate a character`s voice. In other words, the narrator and characters exist laterally as the main linguistic agents at the level of the story and the text. This method structurally embodies the Buddhist theory of "not the same, not different," and presents a new prospect for Buddhist poetry.
