The present study sheds light on the correlation between the meaning of a word and its usage. More precisely, we provide an analysis of the transitive verb "akeru" in Japanese in order to reveal the lexical meanings of "akeru" by distinguishing between the basic meaning and its derived meanings and by examining the conditions on which such derived meanings emerge. Our main focus is put on the interrelations between the meaning of the verb "akeru" and its argument NP marked with the accusative case particle -o. This discussion includes the issue of whether the form "akeru" appearing in various syntactic environments represents polysemy or synonymy, based on the distinct "kanji" notations used for each instance of "akeru". Our findings are as follows. First, in cases where "akeru" presents a basic meaning, an -o-marked argument NP describes a location or a space. Second, in cases where "akeru" presents a derived meaning, the meaning in question may be either a structure-constrained meaning or an idiomatic meaning; for the former, the combinatorial pattern to which "akeru" belongs needs to include a -ni-marked NP, whereas for the latter, the NP slot marked with -o is occupied with an abstract noun or a concrete noun denoting abstract aspects of a concrete entity. Third, in some restricted environments, the combinatorial pattern of "akeru" may contain a body-part noun (denoting eyes), with either its basic or derived meanings being represented.
