본 연구는 감각통합심리운동을 통한 신체활동이 자폐성 장애유아의 의사소통기능 습득과 상동행동 감소에 미치는 효과를 알아보기 위한 실험연구로서 자폐성 장애유아 3명을 대상으로 주3회 매회기 40분 내외로 총 38회기에 걸쳐 실시하였으며 대상자간 중다 기초선 실험설계를 하였다. 자폐성 장애유아들의 의사소통기능 습득에 따른 수행율 연구결과는 기초선에서 거의 나타나지 않았던 의사소통기능 수행이 중재가 시작되면서 대상유아 3명 모두에게서 완만하게 점진으로 상승하는 수행의 증가를 나타내었다. 유지 단계의 3회기 또한 중재 단계의 평균 수행율보다 높은 수행율을 보였다. 의사소통기능 수단별 표현에서는 대상유아 A와 B는 비언어적으로 표현한 수행율이 가장 높았지만 대상유아 C는 비언어적+언어적으로 표현한 수행율이 가장 높았다. 상동행동의 빈도수 감소에 대한 변화 또한 기초선 단계에서 대상유아 3명 모두 평균 20회 이상의 많은 상동행동의 빈도수를 보였으나 중재가 시작되면서 점진적으로 감소하는 빈도수를 보였으며, 특히 중재 종료 전 5회기 평균 상동행동의 빈도수는 5회 내외로 많은 감소를 나타내었다. 유지 단계 또한 3명의 대상유아 모두에게서 긍정적 결과를 가졌다. 이러한 연구 결과를 토대로 자폐성 장애유아의 의사소통기능 습득과 상동행동 개선을 위한 감각통합심리운동의 신체활동 적용 방법에 관한 효과의 검증과 후속 연구에 대하여 제언하였다.
