힌디어 문학사에서 바르뗀두 하리슈짠드라 (1850-1885)는 중세에서 근대로 넘어가는 전환기 시대의 대표적인 문인이다. 근대로의 전환기에 영국 식민치하 지역어 지식인의 새로운 시대의식을 담을 만한 새로운 문학양식의 필요성이 대두되었다. 새로운 시대의식을 반영하는 사회 실천적 기능을 하는 서사양식으로 희곡이 가장 먼저 형성되었다. 본 논문에서는 시대의식의 반영이라는 문학의 사회실천적 목적이 희곡양식의 분화에 영향을 주었을 것이라는 가정을 입증하기 위해 바르뗀두의 작품의 형식적인 측면과 시대의식과의 관련성을 분석하며 논의를 전개하고자 한다. 바르뗀두의 희곡 「바라뜨 두르다샤」는 새로운 시대의식을 알레고리의 기법을 통해 전달하는 대표적인 근대극이다. 작품의 산스크리트 고전극, 서사구조와 비극, 인물설정과 시가의 극의 기법을 살펴보아 근대극의 양식을 추적하고, 기법에 투영된 알레고리를 추적하여 영국식민치하 지역어 지식인의 시대의식을 살펴보기로 한다.

The Bharatendu Hariscandra (1850-1885) is a leading literary figures of the transition period from medieval era to modern era. It is researched by focusing on the points that characteristics distinguishing modern literature with medieval literature are the formations of new consciousness and narrative forms. Based on previous research the theory is developed that new consciousness would influenced the formation of hindi narrative styles. Bharatendu``s ‘Bharata Durdasa’ is a modern play that conveys new consciousness by allegory. This paper attempts to prove the theory by researching how the forms and techniques of the drama and allegory are related. Sanskrit classical drama formation, narrative structure, tragedy, characters and lyrics of ‘Bharata Durdasa’ are researched to track modern drama style reflected new consciousness through allegory.
