Madame de Stael was one of the writers who are part of the ‘generation of 1789’ with Benjamin Constant, Chateaubriand, Senancour. They were not the main characters of the Revolution, but, as witnesses, they were interested in common after the Revolution, to the new company to rebuild and the role to be taken by the literature in this society revolutionized. However, they do not have the same perspective on the literature because of their ideological dispute, but it is interesting to consider their thoughts on literature in their similarity and difference. This study on A Treatise on Ancient and modern literature of Madame de Stael will be the first step. This work published in 1800 did not attract much attention of researchers in relation to his other work on literary theory, On Germany and remains today only a work that suggested for the first time to consider the methods of literary history, the concepts of comparative literature and literary criticism of another way. But in reality, this was not all. With the firm belief in human perfectibility, she also suggested what was to be literature and a writer role in the formation of modern literature. The literature related to virtue, glory, freedom and happiness that actively participates in the dynamic movement of history for the progress of humanity was the literary program of our writer but this program could not succeed. However the thought of Madame de Stael on modern literature contains various facets of a writer between two centuries deserves reconsideration.
