『참을 수 없는 존재의 가벼움』은 체코 출신의 소설가 밀란 쿤데라의 대표작이다. 이 논문은 『참을 수 없는 존재의 가벼움』에 등장하는 4명의 주인공 중의 한 명인 토마시의 삶을 분석한 것이다. 쿤데라는 소설을 “덫이 되어버린 이 세계에서 인간의 삶이 의미하는 바가 무엇인지를 탐구하는 것”이라고 정의한다. 삶은 우연의 연속이고, 인간은 매번 우연 앞에서 스스로 결정을 내려야 한다. 그러나 문제는 인간은 한 번밖에 살지 못한다는 사실이다. 한 번밖에 살지 못하는 세상, 즉 회귀가 없는 세계에 살고 있는 인간의 결정적인 특징은 살아본 경험이없다는 사실이다. 살아본 경험이 없기에 어떤 결정이 옳은지 확신할 수 없다. 그럼에도 불구하고 우리는 매번 결정을 내려야 한다. 이것이 바로 인간이 처한 “실존의 딜레마”이고, 쿤데라는 인간이 처한 이런 상황에 대해 덫이라는 은유적 표현을 사용한 것이다. 쿤데라는 『참을 수 없는 존재의 가벼움』에서 토마시를 통해 불확실성 속에서 결정을 내리고 살아갈 수밖에 없는 인간의 모습을 포착하고 있다. 쿤데라가 주장하는 것은 머뭇거리는 결정의 순간, 그리고 결정 후의 복잡한 감정이 바로 무의미라는 가벼움과 가치 있는 것을 찾으려는 무거움의 하모니라는 것이다. 그러니까 가벼움과 무거움의 교차와 반복, 즉우연과 필연의 모순적 충돌과 봉합이 빚어내는 아름다움이 삶이라는 것이다.

The Unbearable Lightness of Being is the masterpiece of the Czech novelist, Milan Kundera. This article is to analyze life of Thomas, one of four protagonists of The Unbearable Lightness of Being. Kundera defines the genre of novel as "an investigation of human life in the trap the world has become". Life is a series of coincidences and human should decide by oneself in front of them every time. However, the problem is that human cannot live just once. The decisive characteristic of human who lives in the world given to live just once, namely, where is no return, is that there is no experience of having lived. Because of it, he or she cannot be sure which decision is right. In spite of this, we have to decide something every time. This is the dilemma of ``existence`` of human, and Kundera uses a metaphor of trap on these situations of human. In The Unbearable Lightness of Being, Kundera captures a human who has to decide and live in uncertainty through Thomas. His argument is that the moment of reluctant decision and complex emotion after a decision are harmony between lightness of meaningless and heaviness seeking something valuable. Therefore, The Unbearable Lightness of Being is the intersection and repetition of lightness and heaviness, that is, a beauty of contradictory collision between coincidence and inevitability.
