본 연구는 17세기 로뻬의 『복수 없는 처벌』과 18세기 우에르따의 『라껠』에 나타난 비극성을 구체적으로 비교분석해봄으로써 이 두 비극작품이 지닌 비극성의 실체와 본질에 좀더 가까이 접근해보고, 어떠한 요소들이 이 두 비극작품들의 근본적인 차이를 야기하였는 지를 규명해보고자 한다. 우선 로뻬의 『복수 없는 처벌』에는 운명을 극복하려는 나약한 인간의 처절한 몸부림이 플롯 중심으로 전개되고 있다. 이는 인간정신의 숭고함을 나타내고자 했던 아리스토텔스적 비극의 핵심으로, 로뻬는 이를 통하여 인간 내면의 본질을 좀더 심도 있게 나타내고자 했다. 반면 우에르따의 연극 『라껠』은 작품의 비극적 결말과 함께 권선징악을 나타내는 시적 정의와 민중과 충신을 외면한 절대 권력자의 실정(失政)을 주인공들의 성격을 중심으로 묘사함으로써, 인간의 사악함은 반드시 응징되어진다는 윤리적 교훈과 당시의 부르봉왕가에 대한 정치적 반항정신을 나타내고 있다. 이와 같은 두 비극의 본질적 차이는 결국 두 작가의 성향에서 기인한다고 봐야할 것이다. 로뻬는 무엇보다 정치적인 측면에서 철저하게 체제순응적인 보수적 성향을 지닌 작가였다. 그리고 그는 극작에 있어서 이데올로기적 논쟁보다는 인간의 본질에 더 많은 관심을 기울였던 것이다. 반면우에르따는 로뻬처럼 당시의 체제를 옹호하는 작가도 아니었고, 무엇보다 정치적 비판을 자신의 연극에 반영하는 것에 거부감이 없었다. 그의 연극 『라껠』이 완성되고 한참이 지난후에야 스페인에서 초연되었고, 이 연극으로 인해 그가 정치적 탄압을 받았다는 사실이 이를 말해고 있다. 이러한 두 작가간의 차이가 플롯 중심의 불가항력적 비극성과 성격 중심의 상대적 비극성이라는 본질적 차이를 만들었던 것이다.

This study is to try to check the tragedies on Lope``s El castigo sin venganza of 17th century and Huerta``s Raquel of 18th century and compare them with each other in order to approach closer to the essence of the tragedy in these two dramas and what kinds of elements caused the difference between these two dramas. First of all, in Lope``s El castigo sin venganza, the plot is developed focused on the desperate struggle of a weak human trying to overcome his fate. This is the core of the Aristoteles`` tragedy which tries to show the elegance of human mind. Lope tried to show the essence of human through this drama. On the other hand, Huerta``s drama Raquel describes the failed politics by an absolute tyrant who ignored the wishes of the public and faith subject by describing the characteristics of the protagonists, thus indicating that the wickedness of human shall be punished and describing the political protest against the loyal family Bourbon at that time. The essential difference between these two tragedies is likely to come from the natures of two authors. Lope was a conservative author who was trying to follow the system in terms of politics. In addition, in the drama making, he was more interested in the essence of human than the ideological dispute. On the other hand, Huerta was not an author who supported the existing political system at that time as Lope was but he did not hesitate to reflect his political criticism on his drama. The fact that his drama Raquel was first played in Spain a long time after it was completed and that he was politically persecuted by the drama show the personality of the author. The difference between these two authors makes the essential difference between their dramas as one shows the force majeure tragedy focusing on the plot while the other shows the relative tragedy focusing on the personality.
