우리나라는 분단된 지 70년이 넘었지만 아직 통일이 되지 않고 있다. 그리고 지금도 휴전선에서는 남북한의 군인들이 대치 중인 상태이다. 이러한 상황에서 우리는 평화통일을 이루기 위하여 수많은 노력을 했었다. 그러나 엄밀히 말해서 1990년대 이전 남북한의 통일론은 자신의 정당성과 체제우월을 내세우기 위한 도구로 종종 사용되었다. 1990년대 초 국제 사회가 변화되기 시작하면서 우리 정부는 능동적인 자세로 통일에 임해 왔었다. 보수적 정권에서는 대북 강경책을 유지하였고 진보적 정권에서는 주로 대북 유화책을 사용해 왔었던 것이 사실이다. 1990년대 이전 주로 보수주의 교회는 북한 선교를 중심으로 한 통일운동을 하였던 반면에, 진보주의 교회는 북한교회와의 직접적인 대화를 추구하고 북한정권에 유화적인 자세를 취해왔었다. 그러나 1990년대 이후 보수주의 교회와 진보주의 교회에서는 주로 북한 돕기운동을 하였었다. 이러한 통일노력에도 불구하고 현재 북한은 지속적으로 긴장감을 조성해가고 있다. 이러한 상황에서 우리 정부는 평화통일을 이루기 위해 일관성 있는 대북 정책이 요구되어진다. 교회 역시 평화통일을 이루기 위하여 서로 협력하여 일관성 있는 자세로 북한 교회나 북한 정권을 대하여야 할 것이다. 그리고 다가올 통일을 대비하여 통일교육에 앞장서고 탈북민 지원 등 민간단체에서 할 수 있는 최선을 노력을 다하여야 할 것이다.
Korea has divided more than 70 years in the hope of unification. And both soldiers are still in the state of confrontation in the armistice line. In this circumstances, we have made many efforts to achieve a peaceful unification. Strictly speaking, however, their standpoints of the unification were sometimes used as tools for the assertions of each own legitimacy and superiority. With the international community starting to change in the early 1990s, our government has come to work for the unification with positive attitude. In South Korea the conservative government was maintaining a hard line stance, but the liberal regime was maintaining a soft line stance to North Korea. So did the church. The conservative church made some unification movements in the center of mission for North Korea, on the other hand the liberal church made some movements for the direct conversation with mild attitudes. But since the 1990s the conservative church and the liberal church mainly made some aiding movements to North Korea. Despite these unification efforts, North Korea is currently continuing to make suspense. In this circumstances, our government is required to achieve the consistent policy to North Korea for peaceful unification. Every church also must achieve consistent policies to North Korea by their mutual cooperation. And the church must go ahead in the unification education and make the most of the help for escapers from North Korea by many nongovernmental organizations.
