This paper studied the correlation between complexes and desires of Yu Chi-Hwan’s early poetry in the viewpoint of psychology. First, his self-alienation complex is caused by the sense of guilty about not making resistance against the reality of that time at the risk of his life. The self-alienation complex appears as gestures of self-depreciation and operates as a psychological mechanism that encourages soaring desires. Also, the cause of his self-destruction complex is that the poet was sensitively conscious of the eye of other people asking social ethics of unmanly survivors under Japanese colonial rule. The self-destruction complex operates as a psychological mechanism that drives desires for salvation. Lastly, the self-obliteration complex comes from the fear of death, namely, the dread of going out of existence. ‘Saengmyung’ and ‘moksum’, the extremely utilized poetic words by Yu Chi-Hwan can be the proof that he is ruled by the self-obliteration complex. The self-obliteration complex acts as the trigger for desiring the infinite. Most humans try to hide their complexes in the deep place of unconsciousness or are afraid that these complexes are touched offensively by others. However, Yu Chi-Hwan stimulated his complexes continuously and linked them with the problems of desire so that he could seek intensely self-consciousness. Also, the process of embodying complexes and desires contributes to unique esthetic achievement of Yu Chi-Hwan’s poetry. Therefore, the matter of complexes and desires in Yu Chi-Hwan’s poetry is not only a way to heal wounded ego but also a method to build his unique poetic world.
