재일조선인 작가 김석범의 대하소설 『화산도』 전권은 그동안 한국어로 완역되지 않아 한국문학의 비평과 연구에서 사각지대로 놓여 있었다. 하지만 『화산도』 전권이 2015년에 한국어로 완역된 만큼 이 작품이 지닌 문학사적 가치와 의미에 대해 한국문학의 연구는 본격적으로 수행되어야 한다는 점에서 이번 연구는 그 첫발을 내딛은 것이다. 무엇보다 김석범이 ‘재일조선인’으로서 일본어의 주박(呪縛)과 고투하는, 그리하여 제국의 언어(일본어)로 수렴되거나 포섭될 수 없을 뿐만 아니라 그의 조국의 모어(조선어)로 온전히 궁리할 수 없는 4·3 안팎의 세계가 『화산도』에서 밀도있게 탐구되고 있다. 때문에 『화산도』에서 탐구되는 문학적 진실은 4·3의 실체를 구명(究明)하는 데 자족하는 게 아니라 4·3의 주박(呪縛)으로부터 해방됨으로써 4·3에 대한 정명(正名)의 길을 내고 무엇보다 4·3으로 훼손된 억울한 영육(靈肉)의 상처를 치유하여 신생을 누리도록 하는 것과 결코 무관하지 않다. 이번 연구는 『화산도』에 대한 첫 번째 연구로, 『화산도』의 논쟁점이 될 수 있는 4·3무장봉기와 연관된 문학적 진실에 초점을 맞췄다. 여기에는 작품 속에서 혁명의 성격을 띤 4·3무장봉기에 대한 작중인물 이방근의 입장, 특히 대단원의 결미에서 충격적으로 다가온 이방근의 자살과, 혁명에 뛰어든 섬 사람들이 현실적 패배에 직면한 점, 그리고 반혁명(反革命) 권력의 양상에 대해 집중적 논의를 펼쳤다. 이를 통해 혁명과 문학, 그리고 ‘섬의 혁명’ 혹은 ‘혁명의 섬’에 대한 문학적 진실을 성찰해본다.

Japanese Korean novelist Kim Seok-Bum’s roman-fleuve Hwasando(화산도) has not completely been translated into Korean so has been blind spot in Korean literature’s study and criticism. However all Hwasando(화산도) was translated into Korean completely in 2015. And then Korean literature’s study on the value of literature history and the meaning about Hwasando(화산도) will be performed sincerely. So this study is the first step. Above all Kim Seok-Bum as one of Japanese Korean has been fighting against Japanese ritual binding therefore the interior and exterior of the April Third Uprising which can’t be detail approached or focused on the imperial language(Japanese) as well as can’t be completely understood through his mother language(Korean) is closely studied. That’s why literary truth studied by Hwasando(화산도) does not satisfy on finding substance of the April Third Uprising but makes a road to define justice conception as emancipation from ritual binding the April Third Uprising. And it is never unconcerned keeping a rebirth as curing the hearts of mortified soul-body by the April Third Uprising. I emphasize once again this study is the first on all Hwasando(화 산도) in Korea. I focused on literary truth concerned on the April Third armed Uprising in terms of consisting hot issues. So my arguments emerge intensively the position of main character Lee Bang-Guen on the April Third armed Uprising, especially astonished his suicide in ending, what islanders who participated in revolution face on real defeat, and the anti-revolution power’s aspects. I introspect on literary truth on both revolution and literature, and ‘revolution of island’ or ‘island of revolution’.
