本作品は大正6年に發表された芥川龍之介の短編である。芥川は江戶幕府時代の赤穗事件を取材し、その事件の中心人物であった大石內藏助を主人公にして彼の內面の世界を發いたのである。內藏助が細川越中守綱利の屋敷に預けられていた、ある春の一時、仲間たちと談笑のうち彼自身だけが感じていた＜云いようのない寂しさ＞を?細に描きあげている。その＜云いようのない寂しさ＞は＜彼の復讐の擧も、彼の同志も、最後にまた彼自身も、多分このまま、勝手な賞讚の聲と共に、後代まで傳えられる事であろう＞という內藏助の眞の心境を知らない他者のエゴイズムから來るものである。芥川は人間のエゴイズムに飜弄されながらも、そこから自由でない人間本然の姿に失望し、その心境を＜云いようのない寂しさ＞を以って吐露しているのである。

This work is a short story published by AkutagawaRyunosuke in 1917. Akutagawa describes Ouisikuranosuke`s inner world, who is the main character in the story and central figure in the affair, against the backdrop of Ako incidenthappend in the Edo era. Kuranosuke is captivated by inexpressible desolation during talking with his partisans involved in the affair. That is from that unborn generation will talk about him and his partisans as well as his avenging his master. In other words, his desolation is from people`s egoism who don`t know his feeling. Akutagawa disappoints man`s innate phase that man is fooled with and cannot free from egoism and then delivers the feeling as inexpressible desolation.
