This study examined the effect of vision on self-rated health in older adults and the mediating role of social participation. Data from the 2012 Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing were analyzed. The results shows that higher level of vision impairment was associated with worse self-rated health status. Higher level of vision impairment was also associated with lower level of social participation. In addition, the effect of vision on self-rated health were mediated by the level of social participation. The findings suggest that vision is an important factor which affects overall self-rated health status among the elderly. The findings also suggest that there is a need to develop interventions to promote social participation of older adults with vision problems for healthy quality of life.
