<신단공안(神斷公案)> 평어는 인물과 사건에 대한 평이 주를 이루고, 인물과 사건에 대해 간단히 분석하거나 숨겨진 의미를 짚어주는 것, 감상을 표출하는 것이 나머지를 차지한다. 이 평어들은 대체로 평자의 생각을 직접적으로 간명하게 드러내는 서술 방식을 구사하면서도 종종 논리적으로 서술함으로써 평자들의 가치 지향을 드러내기도 했다. 그래서 평자의 생각을 독자들이 즉시 이해할 수 있도록 유도하는 데 초점을 맞추었다. 각 화별로 봤을 때, 제4화부터 평어 기능이 확장되고, 독자들에게 내용을 이해시켜 주는 역할이 추가되었으며, 종결부 평어의 `총괄적 성격`이 약화되었다. 그러나 중심 기능은 여전히 인물, 사건에 대한 `평`에 있다. 또 제4화~제7화 내에서도 평어의 양상이 조금씩 다르다. 평자들은 기존의 제도나 관습을 타파할 것, 유교적 가치관의 본질을 잘 실천할 것, 구습(舊習)에 얽매인 의식을 타파하고, 올바른 마음가짐을 갖고 살 것 등을 주장했다. <신단공안> 평어를 통해 볼 때, 작자는 연재 과정에서 쌓인 경험을 적극적으로 활용하며 변화를 꾀했으며, 전통적 평어 기능을 유지하면서 새로운 기능을 접목하는 데 성공했다. 평어의 가치 지향은 『황성신문』의 개혁 방향과 부분적으로 일치한다. 다만, 그들이 유교적 가치관을 들고 나온 이유, 이후 문명론과 연계 문제 등을 다시 살필 필요가 있다.

“Sindangongahn” Pyeong-eo(Critical remark) mainly consists of comments on figures and events, and simple analysis of figures and events, pointing out hidden meanings and expressing appreciation take the rest. While overall, these critical remarks used the method of description, revealing the critic`s opinion directly and briefly, they often used a logical description to show their value orientation. So, they focused on inducing the readers` immediate understanding of the critics` opinions. Judging from each episode, the Pyeong-eo function expanded from Episode 4, the role to make readers understand the contents was added and `the general characteristic` in Pyeong-eo at the closing section became weakened. However, the main feature is still `comments` on figures and events. In addition, in Episodes 4 through 7, too, the aspect of Pyeong-eo differs a little bit. Critics insisted on breaking down the existing systems and customs, practicing the essence of Confucian values, properly, breaking down the consciousness restricted to old customs and living with the right mindset. Judging through “Sindangongahn” Pyeong-eo, the author attempted a change, actively utilizing the experiences accumulated in the process of publishing it serially and succeeded in grafting new features, maintaining the traditional functions of Pyeong-eo. Value orientation of Pyeong-eo is partially consistent with the reform direction of Hwang-Seong Newspaper. Yet, it is necessary to examine the reason why they brought out Confucian values and the issue of their connection with the subsequent theory on civilization.
