이 글은 J. S. GALE(게일, 奇一)이 편찬한 _유몽천자(?蒙千字)_(1901～)의 국한문(國漢文)이 보이는 문체상의 특징을 「권 1」, 「권 2」, 「권 3」을 대상으로 하여 이들을 비교하는 방법으로 고찰하고자 한 것이다. 이렇게 하고자 하는 까닭은 같은 국한문이기는 하지만 「권 1」, 「권 2」, 「권 3」은 국문과 한문의 혼용 정도에 차이가 있고 한문의 역할과 한문의 문법이 반영된 정도에도 차이가 있기 때문이다. 따라서 이 글에서는 한문의 역할과 한문 문법의 반영 정도를 살펴가며 구문상의 특징을 살피고자 하였다. 그러려면 언어적 분석을 위한 객관적이고 실질적인 기준의 마련과 활용이 필요한데, 이 글에서는 ①한문 부사의 출현 여부, ②한문 접속사의 사용, ③한문 관형 구성의 등장, ④한문 어순에 따른 구문의 사용 등을 기준으로 삼고 『서유견문(西遊見聞)』(1895)와 비교하여 보았다. 각 권에서 보이는 문체적 특성을 구체적으로 살펴보기 위하여 `以`, `於`, `然`, `于`, `況`, `又`, `但`, `雖`를 이용하여 한문 전치사, 접속사, 감탄사, 부사의 사용 실태, `者`를 포함하는 관형 구성의 사용 실태, `有`, `無`, `不`, `如` 등과 같은 구문이 어떻게 쓰이는지를 살펴보았다. 그 결과 「권 1」은 한문의 문법보다는 국문의 문법이 지배적인 문체로 이루어졌다는 것을 알 수 있었고, 「권 2」는 국문의 문법 위에서 한문의 문법이 작용하는 문체로 이루어졌으며, 「권 3」은 한문의 문법이 주가 되는 문체임을 알 수 있었다. 이런 특성을 『서유견문』과 비교하여 보면 『서유견문』은 대체로 「권 2」가 보이는 특징과 유사한 면을 보이되, 한문 전치사, 접속사, 감탄사, 부사의 사용 실태와 관형 구성의 실태에서는 「권 3」, 「권 1」의 특징도 섞여 나타나는 면을 보인다는 것을 알 수 있었다.

The aim of this paper is to inquire into character of style of writing in Yumongcheonja(?蒙千字) published by J. S. GALE. Object of consideration is the first, the second and the third volume of Yumongcheonja. The first, the second and the third volume have same character of style of writing in that written by Korean and Chinese mixed up style. But there are difference in reflection degree in each volume role of Chinese and of Chinese grammar. In this paper, therefore, I`d like to examine syntactic features of Chinese in Yumongcheonja considering role of Chinese and of Chinese grammar. To achieve this goal, the objective for linguistic analysis and utilization requires the provision of practical criteria and I used following criteria. Firstly, whether the emergence of adverb of Chinese. Secondly, use of conjunction of Chinese. Thirdly, use of modifier form of Chinese. Fourthly, use of phrase of Chinese in accordance with word order of Chinese. Then I were compared with the result character of Seoyugyeonmun(西遊見聞). Through the study results I could see like below. The first volume has style of writing dominated by Korean grammar rather than that of Chinese. The second volume has style of writing affected by the Chinese Grammar based on Korean grammar. The third volume has style of writing dominated by Chinese grammar. I compared these results with character of Seoyugyeonmun. As a result style of writing of Seoyugyeonmun are generally similar to the second volume of Yumongcheonja but partially the first volume and the third volume.
