본 논문에서는 철학상담 분야에 대한 연구동향을 살펴보기 위해 철학상담의 정체성 관련 논문의 연구동향을 추적한다. 철학상담의 정체성과 관련해서는 심리상담과의 차이를 분명히 하고자 하는 내용의 연구가 주류를 이룬다. 심리상담계와의 논쟁을 통해 심리상담과 철학상담의 차이에 대해 심리상담은 상담의 하위분야이고 철학상담은 철학실천의 하위분야라는 주장이 제기되었다. 철학상담의 정체성과 관련한 논의의 주요 논점 3가지는 다음이다. 첫 번째, 철학상담은 철학의 하위분야인가 상담의 하위분야인가? 두 번째, 철학상담은 교육인가, 교육이 아닌가? 세 번째 철학상담은 치료인가, 치료가 아닌가? 첫 번째 논점과 관련해서는 철학상담을 철학실천의 하위분야로 보는 입장으로 정리되어가고 있다. 치료와 교육과 관련해서는 논의가 진행중이다. 철학상담과 철학교육의 연계가능성에 대해 주목하는 연구도 있고 철학상담이 철학교육이 되어서는 상담의 효과를 거둘 수 없음을 강조하는 연구도 있다. 성공적인 철학상담은 철학교육의 효과가 있고 성공적인 철학교육은 철학상담의 효과가 있다는 주장도 제기되었다. 치료와 관련해서는 세 가지 입장이 있다. 철학상담은 치료이므로 치료기법을 방법론적으로 의식화해야 한다는 입장, 치료라는 단어를 상징적으로는 사용할 수 있다는 입장, 치료라는 단어는 상징적으로라도 사용해서는 안된다는 입장으로 구분된다.

The aim of this study is to grasp some tendencies of Philosophical Counseling Studies. Those tendencies can be reduced to some questions of its identity. The identity question is raised originally in its comparison with Psychological Counseling concerning their different status and practical roles. Some scholars argues that Psychological Counseling belongs to Counseling Practice, while Philosophical Counseling is a subfield of Philosophical Practice. But this kind of differentiation was not enough to clarify the nature of Philosophical Counseling. On the contrary, it raised more complicate questions as follows: (1) does Philosophical Counseling belongs either to Philosophy or to Counseling Studies?; (2) is it compatible with Philosophy Education, or not?; (3) can it be a therapy, or not? On the one hand, it is generally agreed that Philosophical Counseling is a subfield of Philosophical Practice. On the other hand, the discussion concerning its relation to education or to therapy is not yet settled. But we need to notice a remarkable argument according to which, though Philosophical Counseling intends neither to be an education nor to be therapy, insofar as it functions rightly, it can produce an educational effect and the effect of therapy. It is also remarkable that some studies concentrate on the possibility of cooperation between Philosophical Counseling and Philosophy Education. But there are also some important warning that Philosophical Counseling could not get its counseling effect, if it is assimilated to Philosophy Education. Nonetheless, not less scholars estimate that a successful Philosophical Counseling will lead a successful Philosophy Education, and vice-versa. As for the relation between Philosophical Counseling and therapy, there are three remarkable positions according to which: (1) since Philosophical Counseling contains therapy, we need establish its processes and methods; (2) in Philosophical Counseling the term “therapy” can be used only as a symbolic metaphor; (3) the term “therapy” must not be used even in metaphorical level.
